Ethereum's Four-Minute Settlement Plan Could Make Moving Crypto Cheaper

Ethereum could soon settle transactions much faster. Ethereum researchers have proposed cutting transaction finality from about 16 minutes to roughly four minutes — a change that, if adopted, could lower the cost of moving crypto between blockchains.

Ethereum’s Four-Minute Settlement Plan Explained

Finality is the point at which a blockchain transaction becomes irreversible — the moment funds are truly safe to use. Right now, Ethereum takes around 16 minutes to reach that state. The new draft proposal targets a roughly fourfold reduction, bringing finality down to about four minutes.

According to the proposal’s summary, faster finality would help cross-chain money transfer services, which currently tie up funds while customers’ payments clear. Getting funds back sooner lets these services reuse capital more quickly, which could translate into lower costs for users moving crypto between networks.

No Activation Date Yet

The plan would separate validators’ block-selection and finality votes — a structural change that could also enable further speed gains down the road, and potentially an eventual shift to quantum-resistant signatures. But the proposal is still unfinished, with no activation date announced. As always with protocol-level changes, the details will go through extensive research and testing before anything reaches mainnet.
