Antonio Conte Denies "Advanced" Man Utd Talks: "Unfounded" Claims

Antonio Conte has denied being in “advanced negotiations” with any club after Italian newspaper La Repubblica claimed he had held talks with Manchester United about replacing Michael Carrick. The 57-year-old free agent called the reports “unfounded” in an Instagram statement.

La Repubblica reported on Thursday that Conte had spoken with United’s board about taking over following the 4-1 defeat against Como on Wednesday, and claimed the former Chelsea manager had demanded full control of United’s transfer policy and the right to appoint his own staff at Old Trafford.

Conte Manchester United Statement: Full Response

Conte shot down the specifics: “I have read reports of financial demands and requests for full control that I have supposedly already made to the clubs mentioned, as well as reservations about what has been described as my ‘strong personality’. These reports are unfounded.” While BBC Sport understands Conte is keen on the job, he says there are “currently no negotiations at an advanced stage.”

Michael Carrick Future: Who Could Replace Him?

Carrick’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain after the humiliating Champions League defeat to Cesc Fabregas’ Como, though he is set to remain in charge for Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth. Sources told BBC Sport that United have begun identifying possible replacements — with Eddie Howe, Conte and ex-Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann all understood to have their eyes on the job.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has already distanced himself from the links, insisting he is focused on his job with the Seagulls, who sit third in the Premier League. Conte, a free agent after leaving Napoli last season, won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2016-17.
