Bitcoin’s Price Is as Jumpy as Nvidia’s and Eight Times More Turbulent Than the Euro

Bitcoin has calmed down over the years — but not that much. According to CoinDesk’s Omkar Godbole in the October 23 edition of the Daybook newsletter, bitcoin’s price swings are now as jumpy as Nvidia’s stock and still eight times more turbulent than the euro-dollar exchange rate.

The comparison matters: it helps answer whether bitcoin can diversify a portfolio or simply adds more volatility risk.

Bitcoin Volatility vs Nvidia, Euro, S&P 500 and Gold

Earlier this week, CoinDesk discussed how risk management in bitcoin is becoming increasingly popular, steadily reducing the largest cryptocurrency’s volatility and making it more palatable to professional investors. That progress invited the obvious question: how does its stability stack up against major assets?

Using 90-day realized volatility, CoinDesk compared bitcoin with gold (its traditional rival), the S&P 500, the euro-dollar pair (the most liquid fiat currency pair), and Nvidia (the largest stock by market value). The result: bitcoin’s turbulence has cooled enough to rival Nvidia — one of the most volatile mega-cap stocks — but it remains far above the euro-dollar’s gyrations and still has a long way to go before matching traditional safe assets.

What Bitcoin’s Calming Volatility Means

The trend is clear: as institutional participation grows and professional risk-management practices take hold, bitcoin’s wild swings are gradually moderating. For allocators and portfolio managers, that steady decline in volatility is exactly what makes the asset easier to justify holding.

Still, the gap is significant. Until bitcoin’s volatility compresses much further, anyone considering it should understand that it behaves far more like a high-growth tech stock than like gold or a major currency. CoinDesk’s data underscores that reality with hard numbers — progress, but with a long road ahead.
