The Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery anime film opened in Japanese theaters on Friday, October 23, 2026, and the staff used the occasion to reveal new cast members joining the first entry in the new theatrical series — while confirming that a second film is already greenlit.

According to the production staff, Nana Mizuki, Akeno Watanabe, Shunsuke Takeuchi, Nao Tōyama, and Yume Miyamoto star in the film alongside the previously announced newcomers Sumire Morohoshi as Tepaste and Takanori Hoshino as Cravagli. A brand-new key visual for the film was also unveiled on opening day.

Familiar faces return behind the scenes: Masayuki Kojima (Black Bullet) directs once more at Kinema Citrus, with Hideyuki Kurata handling scripts and Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda back as character designers. Series composer Kevin Penkin teams up with Mori Calliope for the film’s theme song, “Chain of the Abyss.”
The project has been a long time coming. Kadokawa announced a sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun back in January 2023, and the Awakening Mystery film series marks the franchise’s big return to the big screen after 2020’s Dawn of the Deep Soul, which earned roughly 102 million yen in its opening three days in Japan.
What Made in Abyss Is About
For newcomers, the story follows orphan Riko, who dreams of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother and descending the colossal pit known as the Abyss — the last unexplored place on Earth. After discovering a human-like robot boy in the caves, the two begin a descent into depths full of strange creatures, priceless relics, and terrible wonders. The series is beloved for pairing gorgeous world-building with an unforgiving sense of danger.
