Oscars 2027 Predictions: Can 'You Can See Everything' Take Down Nolan's 'The Odyssey'?

Variety’s updated 2027 Oscars predictions are out, and the question on everyone’s mind: can anything take down Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”? The surprise answer might be a documentary — Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s “You Can See Everything”, which follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes through the 34 days before she reported to prison.

A $15 Million Documentary Nobody Saw Coming

The A24 documentary, which made a surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, opened to a staggering $15 million over the weekend — a number most nonfiction films never see in a full run. It boasts a record-setting 99 on Metacritic, 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 4.7 on Letterboxd and 9.4 on IMDb.

No documentary has ever been nominated for best picture in 98 Oscar ceremonies. The zeitgeist says this one can be — and if nominated, Variety asks, what if it goes all the way to the top prize? A few studios are trying to frame the race as David vs. Goliath; Variety suggests it might actually be Odysseus vs. Elizabeth Holmes.

Amanda Seyfried’s Wild Awards Play

The film will be campaigned across the board: best picture, director, cinematography, editing, sound and original score. Variety confirmed exclusively that Amanda Seyfried, credited as Elizabeth Holmes while also appearing as herself, is eligible in the acting categories — and A24 will push her for supporting actress. It would be her second nomination after “Mank” (2020), earned for playing two people at once: herself and the woman she already won an Emmy for playing in “The Dropout.” Christopher Abbott, appearing as Holmes’ spouse Billy Evans in recreated scenes, is eligible for supporting actor.

Golden Globes Ruling Hits Michael Jackson Biopic

In other awards news, the Golden Globes denied Lionsgate’s bid to have its Michael Jackson biopic, starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, compete as a comedy or musical. The film is now slated for the drama categories, competing for one of six slots against “The Odyssey” and Los Javis’ “La Bola Negra.” Meanwhile, the Governors Awards honoring Glenn Close and Ridley Scott take place Sunday, November 15.
