SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for the Slow Horses Season 6 finale, “Judgment Day,” which premiered on Apple TV on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Slow Horses Season 6 Finale: Is River Dead?

The finale’s gut-punch came at the end, when River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) went to meet Sid (Olivia Cooke) at his grandfather’s house, only to be poisoned while opening a bottle of wine. River is unconscious when the credits roll, and his fate is left deliberately unknown heading into Season 7.

Randall told Variety that the production prepared two endings for that final Jack Lowden scene, and one of them was the happy version. The show chose the darker path, leaving viewers to sweat until the confirmed seventh season arrives.

Slow Horses Season 6 Deaths: Coe and Emma Flyte

The finale’s body count was brutal even by Slough House standards. The season claimed the psychotic yet endearing Coe (Tom Brooke) and honorary Slow Horse Emma Flyte (Ruth Bradley), while numerous nemeses also met sticky endings, including two Russian assassins and a pair of British hired hands who ended up on the same job.

Meanwhile, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas) finally joined forces to wrap up the disastrous Kazan operation, making media tycoon Damien Cantor the scapegoat so Diana could keep her job as First Desk.

Slow Horses Season 7 Confirmed

The good news: Apple has already renewed Slow Horses for Seasons 7 and 8, with Randall set to return for the eighth installment. River’s fate will be resolved there, and after a finale this cruel, fans are owed at least a glimmer of hope.
