World Athletics and Technogym have turned your gym treadmill into a championship stage with RUN X, the world’s first World Treadmill Championship — a global 5K race where amateurs and elites compete on one live leaderboard, with a $100,000 prize pool on the line.

Qualifying is already underway: certified 5K runs at RUN X Official Centers are open October 23, 2026 through January 24, 2027, with regionals from January 30 to February 28, 2027. The world finals land on March 20-21, 2027 at Technogym Village in Cesena, Italy.
Treadmill World Champs: What They Are and How to Compete
The format is simple: run 5 kilometers on a Technogym-connected treadmill, and your verified time hits a real-time global leaderboard ranked by age group and gender. Top performers advance to regional championships, and from there the top 10 men and top 10 women overall earn a shot at the live world final.
Getting in is built for gym regulars. The championship experience launches from a RUN X tile on the treadmill screen: tap it, scan the QR code with the Technogym App, accept the terms, complete your profile, and pick your starting pace. The treadmill auto-adjusts to your target speed, and the moment you cross the finish line you see exactly where you stand worldwide.
You can take multiple attempts during the window to climb the rankings, and home users with compatible equipment linked to the Technogym digital ecosystem can train from home too.
$100,000 Prize Pool and World Athletics Wild Cards
Beyond the prize money, the stakes are genuinely sporting: World Athletics will award wild-card entries to the member federations of the best overall male and female athletes for the 5K at the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Yangzhou, China.
World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said the partnership creates a virtual competition space that builds a global community and can bring new audiences into the sport. What began as a 2025 April Fools joke of sorts has become one of the boldest experiments in athletics — no weather, no travel, no 4am start lines. Just you, a belt, and the world.
