The breakthrough came in the 29th minute and it was worth the wait. A defensive header dropped for Symonds 25 yards out, and the Brighton midfielder lashed it into the top corner of Constance Picaud’s net — her first WSL goal in almost five years, and one that will live long in the season’s highlight reels.
It was the defining moment of a match Brighton controlled throughout, and the Seagulls turned a tight game into a rout with two goals three minutes apart midway through the second half.
Kirby and Seike turn Brighton win into a rout
The lead was doubled in the 63rd minute when a deflected cross from Marisa Olislagers fell for Fran Kirby to tap in at the far post. Within a couple of minutes the points were safe: Emilie Joramo played in Kiko Seike, who clipped the ball over the outrushing goalkeeper to make it 3-0.
West Ham rallied late with a flurry of chances, but never looked like finding a way back, and Brighton saw out the closing stages comfortably to claim all three points.
What Brighton 3-0 West Ham means for the WSL table
The victory lifts Brighton four places to eighth in the WSL table, leapfrogging the Hammers in the process. West Ham, by contrast, drop two places to twelfth on goal difference — a measure of how damaging a heavy defeat can be in a tight league.
For Brighton, this was more than three points. It was a statement performance built on Symonds’ brilliance, Kirby’s predatory instinct and Seike’s composure — and a reminder that, on their day, the Seagulls can produce football as good as anything in the division.
