Tottenham v Arsenal Preview: WSL North London Derby Could Define Both Seasons

With Tottenham stuttering and Arsenal floundering, Saturday’s north London derby in the Women’s Super League could not arrive at a more dramatic moment — for two rivals who both desperately need a victory, live on BBC One.

Tottenham v Arsenal: a WSL derby that could define both seasons

Arsenal’s problems are stark. The Gunners have scored just five goals in six WSL games this season — the joint-second lowest tally in the division — and sit eighth in the table, nine points off Champions League qualification. Under-pressure boss Renee Slegers, whose 65.2% WSL win percentage since October 2024 is bettered only by Chelsea and Manchester City, has seen toothless home draws with Birmingham and Crystal Palace and defeats at Chelsea and Manchester City.

The numbers behind the drought are damning: Arsenal have the worst shot conversion rate in the division at 5.9% despite creating the third-most chances (93). “You can’t question the commitment of the players, but they are trying to walk it in,” England’s record goalscorer Ellen White told the BBC’s Women’s Football Weekly podcast. “I don’t think a draw is enough.” The loss of team heartbeat Mariona Caldentey for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring issue has been another disruption, while last season’s top scorer Alessia Russo has just one league goal so far.

Spurs also in trouble after bright start

Tottenham’s own fires are just as real. Martin Ho’s side took 10 points from their first four games with only two goals conceded — then shipped 12 goals in two matches, losing 6-1 to London City Lionesses and 6-2 to Chelsea. “We’re not at that level yet,” Ho admitted. “People don’t like to hear it but it’s the honest truth.”

History favors the visitors: Spurs have one win in 13 WSL matches against Arsenal, though they did hold the Gunners to a goalless draw at home last season. And the one stat Arsenal fans can cling to: Alessia Russo has scored more goals against Tottenham than any other opponent in her career. If there’s ever a day for her to rediscover her touch, this is it.
