ESPN Taps Marvel's Vision To Boost ElClásico's Debut On ABC As Barcelona Face Real Madrid

Marvel’s Vision has been drafted in for a very different kind of mission this Sunday: helping ESPN sell ElClásico — the fierce showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid — as the match airs on ABC for the first time. The Disney-owned networks are leaning on one of Marvel’s most recognisable heroes to pull in viewers beyond the usual football audience.

ESPN Taps Marvel’s Vision For ElClásico’s ABC Debut

The collaboration, devised by ESPN and Marvel Studios, centres on a 30-second promo voiced by Paul Bettany, the actor who has long played Vision across Marvel films and series. The promo is designed to give Sunday’s telecast extra pizzazz as ElClásico makes its ABC debut.

Alongside the promo, ESPN has rolled out a soccer-focused Q&A with Bettany across ESPN FC’s social platforms, plus a “motion poster” shared on ESPN FC’s Instagram and TikTok Stories and on ESPN Deportes’ Instagram Story. It is a full cross-platform push, using Marvel’s reach to boost one of world football’s biggest fixtures.

Why Vision, And Why Now?

Vision has two missions at once. The character also has a new streaming series on Disney+ to promote, so the ElClásico tie-in doubles as a showcase for Marvel’s latest project. For ESPN, the superhero hook is a way to grab casual viewers who might not otherwise tune in for a La Liga clash, even one as storied as Barcelona versus Real Madrid.

It is the latest example of Disney using its own brands to cross-promote across sports and entertainment — and with ElClásico airing on broadcast television in the US for the first time, the stakes for a big audience are higher than usual. Whether Vision’s star power converts Marvel fans into football viewers will be clear when Sunday’s ratings land.
