Michael Carrick’s time as Manchester United manager appears to be approaching its end after a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth extended the club’s winless run to eight games. Yet the loudest message from Old Trafford was not just about the manager — it was aimed squarely at the club’s owners.

Manchester United 3-0 Bournemouth Fallout for Michael Carrick
Carrick’s customary lap of appreciation after the match felt heavier than usual. United have now gone eight games without a win, their worst run since 2015-16, following two damaging defeats in a single week. The former midfielder admitted he does not know whether he will still be in charge for next Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.
“The responsibility is mine,” Carrick said after the Bournemouth loss. “I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything either way. I love this place and I’ll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club.” Before the game he had promised a different team — but Sunday’s performance delivered the same frustrations.
Man Utd Fans Turn on Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe
While supporters sang Carrick’s name as he left the pitch, the mood turned the moment he disappeared down the tunnel. Booing rang out until the last player, Diogo Dalot, had left the field, with fans convinced the squad is either not good enough, does not care enough, or both.
Anti-Glazer and anti-Sir Jim Ratcliffe chants began less than a minute into the match. The Glazer family’s leveraged takeover in 2005 remains a source of fury, with club debt now over £1.15bn and interest costs of £852m since then, including £37m in the last financial year alone. Supporters argue that money could have funded far better recruitment.
Many had hoped Ratcliffe, a boyhood United fan who became a minority shareholder on Christmas Eve 2023, would change the club’s direction. Instead, the sense around Old Trafford is that changing the head coach alone will not fix a deeper malaise — a warning the stands delivered loud and clear on an awful day for the club.
