The match was originally advertised for the 2026 edition of Heroes Inmortales, with Mini Vikingo set to challenge Fenix for the Cruiserweight Championship. But plans changed dramatically during week one of the two-week special.

Mini Vikingo’s Injury Changed Everything

During week one of Heroes Inmortales, Vikingo and Fenix shared a segment in the trainer’s room, where Vikingo confirmed he had suffered an injury while competing on WWE NXT. Doctors informed him that he would need to undergo surgery, ruling him out of the title match and leaving Fenix without an opponent.

Vikingo had already been pulled from competition before the special. He was scheduled to compete on the October 20 episode of NXT, but it was announced that he was not cleared to compete, an early sign that something was wrong.

What the Open Challenge Means for Week 2

Rather than vacate the title or wait for Vikingo’s return, Fenix has chosen to defend the championship in an open challenge during week two of Heroes Inmortales on October 31. As of now, the advertised card lists the bout simply as AAA World Cruiserweight Championship, Open Challenge: Rey Fenix (c) vs. TBA.

The open challenge format leaves the door wide open. Anyone could answer the call, from an AAA regular to a surprise name from NXT or the wider lucha libre scene, and that uncertainty is exactly what makes the October 31 show must-see. Fenix has built his reputation on spectacular, high-flying title defences, and an unknown challenger only raises the stakes.

For Vikingo, the focus now shifts to surgery and recovery, with his championship rematch on hold until he is healthy. For Fenix, the mission is simpler: show up on October 31, defend the gold against whoever steps up, and keep the Cruiserweight division moving while his rival heals.
