Jon Stewart took aim at Donald Trump’s fixation on Nicki Minaj on Monday night’s episode of “The Daily Show,” comparing the president to Yogi Bear floating towards a pie as Trump’s odd remarks about the rapper have ricocheted around the internet. Stewart opened the show on the midterm elections — and the issues voters are, in his words, “for some reason” fixated on: the economy, the cost of living and the war in Iran.

Stewart then pivoted to the president’s closing argument on the campaign trail, telling the audience he imagined Trump would be “laser-focused on the issues that matter most” — before cutting to a clip of Trump discussing Minaj in strikingly blunt terms. The juxtaposition did the comedic work for him, and the studio audience responded exactly as Stewart intended.
The segment is classic Daily Show Stewart: take a stray, surreal moment from the campaign trail, hold it up against the serious issues dominating voters’ minds, and let the gap between the two do the talking. The Yogi Bear line — Trump floating helplessly towards the pie — landed because it framed the fixation as less a strategy than a compulsion, impossible to resist and impossible to explain.
Stewart has built his return to The Daily Show around exactly this kind of monologue, using the opening minutes to set the night’s agenda before handing off to the rest of the show. On Monday, that agenda was the strange collision of high-stakes midterm politics and pop-culture detours — and, as ever, Stewart found the joke hiding in the collision itself.
