Ryan Gosling‘s band Dead Man’s Bones is back. The rock duo of Gosling and Zach Shields has released “Lost in the Night”, their first new song in 17 years, complete with a spooky new music video starring Rain Spencer and Noah Jupe — just in time for Halloween.

Spooky season is about to reach its peak, and Dead Man’s Bones are contributing to the holiday spirit in style. The duo — Gosling, star of Project Hail Mary, and Shields, producer of Godzilla: The New Empire — released their first and only self-titled album in 2009, in collaboration with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir. “Lost in the Night” ends that long silence.
Dead Man’s Bones return with Lost in the Night after 17 years
The comeback was teased with an atmospheric Instagram video featuring a haunting voice reciting a poem about ghosts, shadows and the night, before a young girl revealed the release date. The clip fits a band whose identity has always been built around the macabre: their 2009 debut was a curious, atmospheric project built around ghost stories and backed by a children’s choir.
For Gosling, the band has always been a genuine creative outlet rather than a celebrity side project. Music has threaded through his acting career too — from jazz pianist Sebastian in La La Land (2016) to his scene-stealing performance of “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie at the 2024 Oscars.
New Dead Man’s Bones music video stars Rain Spencer and Noah Jupe
Along with the song comes a music video starring Spencer, of The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Jupe, of Hamnet and Avengers: Secret Wars. The clip opens with Spencer in a graveyard, walking through it in a black-and-white filter, before cutting to Jupe lying on a bench — a suitably eerie visual for a band returning at Halloween.
Shields has also collaborated with Spencer before, on the play Dad’s Leg, which ran at Los Angeles’ Hudson Theatre earlier this year. He is currently penning the script for the Gladys prequel film to Weapons (2025) with Zach Cregger, while Gosling has Star Wars: Starfighter due next year and Marvel’s new Ghost Rider movie slated for 2028.
After 17 years away, Dead Man’s Bones have picked the perfect moment to return — and fans who waited nearly two decades for a follow-up finally have a new song to add to their Halloween playlists.
