Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and is doing well following his collapse at the club’s training ground, according to board member for sport Max Eberl. The update, given on Wednesday, is the most encouraging news since the incident last Friday.

Kompany, 40, was rushed to hospital after falling ill while watching Bayern’s second team train. The cause has since been identified as meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the protective membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord, which explains both the sudden collapse and the cautious approach to his recovery.
Vincent Kompany hospital update and recovery timeline
“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl told German broadcaster ARD. “He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.” Eberl added that Kompany will now rest and take medication, following a worrying few days for the former Manchester City defender and his family.
No timeline has been set for Kompany’s return to the dugout. Bayern said on Saturday that it would be a matter of weeks, not days before he is back, and that position has not changed. The club is clearly prioritising a full recovery over a quick comeback, which is the right call given the nature of the diagnosis.
Kompany had been nursing a virus in the days before his collapse and had missed some training sessions. He also missed a pre-match news conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League game against Arsenal last Tuesday, although he was on the touchline for the match itself the following day.
Aaron Danks steps in for Bayern Munich
In Kompany’s absence, English assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge of the first team. Danks oversaw a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday, keeping Bayern’s momentum going during an unsettling week for the squad.
Kompany was appointed Bayern manager in May 2024, and his tenure has been closely watched after his playing career at Manchester City and his managerial work in Belgium and England. His absence leaves a visible gap on the touchline, but Bayern’s structure under Danks has so far absorbed the blow.
For supporters, the discharge from hospital is the news that matters most. A return date can wait; after a collapse linked to inflammation around the brain and spinal cord, rest, medication and patience come first. Bayern will update fans when Kompany is ready to step back into his role.
