Korea Holds 1st AI Creative Contest for Children to Make Webtoons, Stories and Songs

South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) has held the country’s first-ever AI Creative Contest for children, inviting young children and elementary school students to create stories, songs, and webtoons using artificial intelligence. The finals took place on October 24 at the Kakao AI Campus.

Korea’s 1st AI Creative Contest: “A Future Living Alongside AI”

The contest, held for the first time this year, was part of the ministry’s National AI Competition and centered on the theme “A Future Living Alongside AI.” Preliminary rounds took place in 10 regions across the country, beginning in Busan on June 21, and drew approximately 1,700 participants.

Organizers provided four AI tools developed by South Korean companies — Solar, Math AI, Miricanvas, and Witoon — for the young creators to work with.

Before creating their works, participants received instruction in AI ethics and how to use the tools. Mentors made up of current elementary school teachers also helped children unfamiliar with the technology apply what they had learned.

Family AI Festival Draws 300 Finalists to Kakao AI Campus

The final round was organized as a family-oriented AI creative festival, drawing approximately 300 finalists and family members to the Kakao AI Campus. Attendees also took part in various AI activities after the competition.

With webtoons already one of Korea’s biggest cultural exports, teaching the next generation to create them with AI — and to think critically about AI ethics along the way — could shape how the country’s most famous storytelling medium evolves in the years ahead.
