Paul Heyman Reacts to Christian Watson’s Ambulance Return: ‘We Did This in 1991’

Christian Watson turned Thursday Night Football into a wrestling storyline, and Paul Heyman loved it. After the Packers wide receiver left the stadium and came back in an ambulance — then walked out through the side door — Heyman took to social media with a wrestling history lesson for the NFL’s “creative team.”

Watson’s WWE-Style Comeback

Watson was diagnosed with a broken rib during the game but was cleared to return with extra padding, making a dramatic re-entry that looked straight out of a wrestling pay-per-view. Earlier coverage of the night already compared the scene to a WWE SmackDown vs. Raw moment, and Heyman’s reaction only cemented the comparison.

Heyman Credits Sting’s 1991 Ambulance Spot

Heyman revealed WWE did not invent the trick: “We did this with @Sting in 1991 in WCW (vs Ravishing Rick Rude),” he wrote, adding that the industry has repeated it with great success in numerous circumstances. The historical footnote fits perfectly — Sting had to forfeit the United States title if he could not face Rick Rude at WCW Clash of Champions 17, so he arrived in an ambulance and wrestled anyway (though he lost the match).

Heyman closed with a sarcastic salute: “My most sincere compliments to the @NFL’s creative team.” Even the man who built his legend on storytelling could not resist grading the league’s showmanship.
