Just two points separate Sheffield United and Wrexham as the pair lock horns in the Championship at Bramall Lane on Friday night (20:00 GMT), and the sub-plots are piling up.
The match-up pits Blades boss Chris Wilder against his former Southampton youth team-mate Phil Parkinson once again, renewing an unconventional but fast-growing rivalry between the clubs.
Wrexham vs Sheffield United: A Rivalry Gathering Pace
“It’s a tasty game,” said Wilder. “It’s not historical over 15, 20 to 25 years, it’s a recent one, but it’s gathered pace along the way.”
The sides had not met for 19 years before the Blades narrowly beat then-National League Wrexham in a 2023 FA Cup fourth-round replay — a 3-3 draw followed by a 3-1 win for United. That tie, just months before the Red Dragons began three successive promotions under Parkinson, was an early signal of Wrexham’s rise.
Last season, Wrexham won both league meetings: a stunning 5-3 comeback at the Racecourse Ground in December, then a 2-1 comeback win in South Yorkshire in March. Parkinson called the 5-3 “probably one of the best games in the Championship in the whole season.”
Kieffer Moore: The Former Blade Haunting Sheffield United
Two players in particular will draw attention, chief among them former Blade Kieffer Moore. The Wales international scored six times in 30 appearances for Sheffield United in 2024-25 before moving to Wrexham, where he netted twice against his old club last season.
Moore hit 13 goals in his debut Wrexham campaign and already has five this season at a rate of a goal every 160 minutes. “He’s a real handful and a difficult player to play against,” Parkinson admitted. Wilder, for his part, has said he would not have sold Moore had he been in charge.
