Frank Miller is fine with the slowdown in comic book movie adaptations — in fact, he’s relieved. The legendary writer-artist behind 300, Sin City and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns told Variety at Lucca Comics and Games this week that the genre was “really in danger of losing their souls.”

Miller returned to the Italian geek-culture event to mark the 40th anniversary of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the 1986 series that redefined Batman and pushed superhero comics toward adult storytelling.

Frank Miller on Why Fewer Comic Book Movies Is a Good Thing

For Miller, whose gritty, noir-drenched work helped drag comics into the mainstream, the deluge of adaptations eventually became a conveyor belt. The 2000s and 2010s saw dozens of Marvel and DC films a year, plus his own books adapted as Sin City (2005), 300 (2007) and The Spirit (2008), which he directed himself. In Miller’s view, that saturation risked stripping the source material of what made it distinctive in the first place.

His point echoes a familiar criticism of the adaptation boom: films that trade the reckless, rule-breaking energy of comics for conventional Hollywood formulas — counting on limited suspension of disbelief rather than embracing the weirdness of the page.

American Genius Documentary Celebrates 40 Years of The Dark Knight Returns

Alongside his appearance, Miller introduced “Frank Miller – American Genius,” Silenn Thomas’ documentary about his impact on popular culture. The film’s arrival alongside the 40th anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns cements the book’s place as one of the most influential comics ever made — the one that proved a retired, middle-aged Batman could be more terrifying than any young one.
