Matt Riddle has worked under some of the biggest personalities in combat sports, but when asked to pick his best boss, he didn’t hesitate: Vince McMahon. During an interview with That Sweet Pop in New Zealand, Riddle chose McMahon over Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Dana White — and his reason came down to one thing: brutal honesty. Riddle explained that McMahon never waited to deliver bad news. “If he did something he didn’t like, he didn’t wait,” Riddle said. “He told you right to your face, and he told you you messed up and you need to fix this or you’re not going to be here much longer. And you adapt, right?” For Riddle, that directness beat being left in the dark about where he stood.
Matt Riddle on Dana White and UFC Firing
Riddle’s experience with Dana White was very different. He said that by the time White truly let him know how he felt, Riddle had already been fired from UFC — pointing specifically to White publicly ripping him on Fox afterward. Riddle also believes his outspoken support for cannabis didn’t help his UFC relationship at the time, noting the company allowed TRT use and had just landed a Budweiser sponsorship while he pushed a cannabis-friendly message.
“At that time, they were allowing players to use TRT. They just got the sponsorship of Budweiser. So me pushing more of a cannabis-friendly approach and saying alcohol and testosterone is bad, they didn’t like that.”
Triple H vs Vince McMahon Management Style
Riddle’s WWE run had its own ups and downs, but he said McMahon’s management style worked for him: getting told immediately that he screwed up — and that he had better fix it if he wanted to stick around — was preferable to finding out how the boss really felt when it was already too late. The comments add Riddle to the long list of former WWE talent weighing in on the two regimes.
