IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji has set the record straight ahead of his appearance at MLW’s SuperFight pay-per-view. Speaking to Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds, Tsuji said he has not personally requested to main event the November 7th show in Cicero, Illinois — even though he believes the IWGP Heavyweight title deserves the same respect as any other promotion’s top championship.

Yota Tsuji on main eventing MLW SuperFight
Tsuji, speaking through a translator, explained his stance carefully. While he previously spoke about wanting to main event shows as the IWGP champion, he clarified that he has made no such demand for SuperFight, MLW’s biggest show on pay-per-view of the year.
“I don’t personally have the request for my match to be a main event or otherwise,” Tsuji said. “But if and only if MLW is willing to treat me in such a respectful manner, I would gladly accept to be involved in the main event.” He added that he has not been told where his match falls on the card, and is simply grateful to be involved.
Tsuji vs Trevor Lee set for November 7 in Cicero
Tsuji is currently set to compete in singles action against Trevor Lee at the November 7th SuperFight event in Cicero, Illinois. The matchup pits the reigning IWGP Heavyweight Champion — NJPW’s top titleholder — against one of MLW’s standout performers.
The IWGP champion also noted he wants the IWGP Heavyweight title treated as respectfully as other promotions’ championships, a statement that reflects NJPW’s ongoing cross-promotional presence on the American independent scene. Regardless of match placement, Tsuji said he is happy to be part of the show.
