NJ/NY Gotham FC have finally done it. A 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals on Sunday’s NWSL Decision Day clinched the first NWSL Shield in club history, crowning Gotham the best team of the 2026 regular season.

Guro Reiten and Jaedyn Shaw scored a goal in either half at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, as Gotham finished the longest season in NWSL history — 30 games — top of the table with 61 points (18W-7D-5L).
Gotham FC NWSL Shield: Reiten Strikes Early, Shaw Seals It
Gotham came out firing. Midge Purce drove down the right flank in the ninth minute, beat Utah defender Nuria Rabano to the end line, and whipped a cross into a chaotic box. It deflected off Ana Tejada and fell to Guro Reiten, who tapped home from inside the six-yard box for a 1-0 lead.
Utah had its moments — the Royals matched Gotham’s two shots on target in the first half — but Gotham kept control. The return of two key players boosted the Bats in the second half: Shaw came on in the 60th minute and Rose Lavelle followed in the 76th.
Shaw made the difference. In the 80th minute, Lavelle found Purce wide, Purce cut onto her left foot and delivered another superb cross, and Shaw got just enough on the ball to guide it off the post and into the net for 2-0.
Utah Royals Head to San Diego as Gotham’s Trophy Cabinet Grows
The loss was Utah’s only defeat among the eight playoff teams on Decision Day, dropping the Royals to the No. 7 seed. They open the playoffs next weekend at No. 2 San Diego — the Wave’s quarterfinal is set for Friday, November 6 on Prime Video — while No. 1 Gotham hosts No. 8 Seattle Reign on Sunday, November 8 on ABC.
For Gotham, the Shield is the fifth trophy in the last four years under head coach Juan Carlos Amoros: two NWSL Championships (2023, 2025), the CONCACAF W Champions Cup (2025), this year’s Challenge Cup, and now the Shield. The club that once finished last with just four regular-season wins is now officially the NWSL’s top team — and, as head coach Juan Carlos Amoros has said, that should be the standard.
