Becky Lynch was at the peak of her powers — champion and arguably the biggest star in all of WWE — when she had to walk into Vince McMahon’s office and tell him she was leaving to have a baby. She has now revealed exactly how that nerve-racking conversation went down at the 2026 espnW: Women + Sports Summit.

Lynch was asked whether professional wrestling has enough systems in place to support women who become mothers. Speaking from her own experience, she said WWE was “amazing” to her — but admitting she was about to step away while carrying the company’s top title had her terrified.
“I Was Shaking”
“I was the champion at the time, I was a huge star. I was one of, if not the biggest star in the company at the time,” Lynch recalled. “And I had to tell Vince McMahon, ‘Hey, I’m leaving. I’m gonna go have a kid.’ And I was shaking.”
Whatever she feared evaporated instantly. McMahon didn’t hesitate: “Oh my God, congratulations. That is the best news that I’ve ever heard. I’m so happy for you.”
No Pressure, Just Support
Interestingly, it was Lynch herself who tried to keep working. She kept pitching McMahon ideas — documentaries, projects she could handle during the pregnancy — just to feel useful while she was away. He wasn’t interested in putting that kind of pressure on her and told her to focus on what mattered.
Her story has become a touchstone in conversations about motherhood in wrestling, showing that even at the very top of the business, the support can be there when it counts most.
