Fortnite’s latest crossover is dividing players in a way few collaborations ever have. Epic Games revealed on October 20 that Nikki Freeman from the horror hit Obsession is coming to the battle royale — with actress Inde Navarrette announcing the skin in a special collaborative video. The reveal has triggered a heated debate, with some fans even calling for a boycott.

There is no arguing with Obsession’s popularity — Nikki was reportedly one of the most-searched Halloween costumes on Google this year. But her arrival as a purchasable skin in Fortnite is rubbing some horror fans the wrong way, and the reason cuts deep into the film’s plot.
Why Fans Are Uncomfortable
In Obsession, Nikki is the victim of Bear’s wish. Her body is overtaken by a malicious entity while the real Nikki remains trapped inside her own mind — unable to do anything but watch as the possessing force commits atrocities while wearing her skin. She is also taken advantage of by Bear, who pursues intimacy with Nikki’s physical form without the real Nikki’s consent. Bear becomes aware of this in the film but chooses not to try to save her.
For a vocal group of players, turning a character whose story is fundamentally about bodily autonomy and violation into a cosmetic you can buy and wear in-game crosses a line. The backlash has been loud enough that boycott calls are circulating across social media.
Epic Hasn’t Responded Yet
So far, Epic Games has not publicly addressed the criticism. The company has weathered plenty of crossover controversies before — horror icons like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees have appeared in Fortnite — but the discourse around Nikki feels different because it centers on the character’s trauma rather than her scares.
Whether the debate dampens the skin’s sales or fades once it hits the Item Shop tomorrow remains to be seen. One thing is certain: this collaboration has players talking about more than just hitboxes and pickaxes.
