ASCAP is tipping its cap to the writers behind film music’s greatest stories. The winners of the annual awards honoring the year’s most outstanding music writing and broadcasts include biographies of film composers John Williams and Bernard Herrmann, plus a documentary about cult R&B artist Swamp Dogg, liner notes for an archival Frank Zappa release, Rick Beato’s YouTube podcasts, and books about Broadway musicals and Black opera innovators.
What the ASCAP Deems Taylor / Virgil Thomson Awards Honor
These are the 77th annual ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Awards, voted on by a select committee of four ASCAP members. They recognize the best in books, articles, liner notes and broadcast programs about all forms of music — from classical film scoring to cult R&B and YouTube music education.
The honored works celebrate writers who keep music history alive: biographies of two of cinema’s most influential composers, deep-dive liner notes for archival releases, broadcast programs that bring music’s stories to new audiences, and books expanding the conversation around Broadway and opera.
