Netflix Drops Teaser for Manhwa-Based Crime Series The Blue Road

Netflix has released a teaser trailer for The Blue Road, its new live-action series based on the 2002 Korean-Japanese collaborative manhwa — and the crime thriller premieres November 20 at 1:00 a.m. PST.

The Blue Road teaser trailer: Seok-gu Son and Eita Nagayama star as detectives hunting a cross-border serial killer.

The Blue Road Teaser Trailer: Two Detectives, One Cross-Border Killer

The teaser introduces Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency detective Seok Kim (Seok-gu Son) and Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department detective Inose (Eita Nagayama) as they investigate what looks like a string of connected murders spanning South Korea and Japan. Messages left at the crime scenes in both languages — plus disagreements over where the investigation should go — set the two detectives on a collision course even as they are forced to work together.

The series is directed by Joon-hee Han, best known for the acclaimed military drama D.P. and the crime film Coin Locker Girl — a strong sign this one will lean hard and grounded.

Based on the 2002 Manhwa Purungil – Ao no Michi

The adaptation draws from Purungil – Ao no Michi (Blue Road), written by Keishi Edogawa and illustrated by Korean artist Kaya Kwon. The five-volume series was a genuine oddity for its time: a true Korean-Japanese collaboration that blended hard-boiled crime storytelling with themes of cultural tension and cross-border cooperation.

The story opens in Tokyo, where authorities find a twisted, contorted corpse next to a blood-written message in Korean. Then a parallel crime scene surfaces in South Korea — this time with a Japanese message near the victim. The mirrored horrors force both countries’ police to acknowledge the murders are linked, pairing one Korean and one Japanese detective to hunt the killer. (Credits: Netflix Korea)

With true-crime and cross-cultural thrillers thriving on streaming, The Blue Road’s November 20 premiere looks perfectly timed.
