Manga artist Shota Kono has launched a brand-new series titled Nightmare of Oveja Negra (Oveja Negra-gou no Akumu), which debuted simultaneously on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform and MANGA Plus on Tuesday. The science fiction horror series is available in English through MANGA Plus.

The story follows the crew of the spacecraft Oveja Negra, a junk-collecting vessel that gathers and sells space junk. The ship is operating in the red, and its captain, Hank, is drowning in debt. When crew member Yuki picks up a mysterious distress signal, the crew discovers an old, abandoned mining plant and ventures inside hoping to salvage resources — only to realize that something deeply abnormal is happening there.
The premise sets up a classic deep-space horror scenario: a desperate crew, a derelict facility, and a mystery that promises to turn violent. For fans of sci-fi horror manga, the setup has echoes of the tension and dread that define the genre’s best works.
Rensai Grand Prix Winner Launches
The series carries some serious pedigree. Nightmare of Oveja Negra won the grand prize of the Shonen Jump+ Rensai Grand Prix 2025, the serialization award that identifies promising new titles for Shueisha’s digital platform. Winning that competition means the series beat out numerous contenders to earn its spot on Shonen Jump+, one of the most competitive manga platforms in Japan.
