Cody Rhodes is tired of hearing that he once volunteered to drop the WWE Championship — and on the Double Coverage podcast, the champion flat-out denied it, calling the idea that any wrestler would “pitch” losing their title complete nonsense.

Cody Rhodes Addresses the 8-Month-Old WWE Championship Rumor
The rumor dates back roughly eight months, when an online report claimed Rhodes personally suggested losing the WWE Championship. Rhodes said what bothered him was seeing the story repeated online as if it had become established fact.
“There was a story that I had pitched to lose the title, and now I saw somebody referencing this, like eight months ago,” Rhodes said on Double Coverage. “I saw that being talked about as if it was actual evidence.”
Rhodes argued the story fails a basic logic test. Outside of a veteran figuring out who their final opponent should be, he said no champion walks into creative and volunteers to give up the company’s top prize.
Why Cody Rhodes Says No Wrestler Would Volunteer to Lose the Title
“If you ever hear a story of a wrestler pitching to lose the title, you should know right out of the gate they’re lying,” Rhodes said. “No wrestler has ever said, ‘Yeah, I want to, I need to lose the title.'”
He called the championship a wrestler’s “meal ticket,” saying champions want to be beaten for it, never to hand it over. “You never — you want somebody to take it from you. Don’t pitch it.”
Cody Rhodes on Toxic Wrestling Discourse vs. the Live WWE Crowd
Rhodes framed the rumor as a symptom of a bigger problem: online wrestling discourse that looks nothing like what he sees in arenas. His advice to fans caught up in it was simple — go to a show.
“Come to a show and you will see. Oh, people are having a great time. They love all of it,” he said.
So Rhodes isn’t just denying that he ever pitched losing the WWE Championship. He’s also pushing back on how quickly an unverified report can turn into “evidence” after enough repetition online.
