Warner Bros. Clockwork Acquires Park Chan-wook’s Next Film

Published

on

Clockwork, the specialized division at Warner Bros. led by former Neon executive Christian Parkes, hasn’t even begun to release a single movie yet, but it has consistently managed to win the press release taste battle. First it announced at CinemaCon that it will release Sean Baker’s next movie, then it said it was handling the repertory re-release of Ken Russell’s controversial “The Devils” playing in Cannes Classics, and now it decided to buy the starriest project on the Marche du Film.

Clockwork is in exclusive negotiations for the North American rights to “The Brigands of Rattlecreek,” the next film from director Park Chan-wook. Park is currently the jury president at Cannes this year, but that didn’t stop him from making a splashy deal for his own film. Deadline, which first reported the news, claims the deal for the title wound up in the mid-teens.

“Brigands of Rattlecreek” had arguably the most star power and prestige of any film being presented on the Cannes Market. It’s a Western that stars Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei, who starred in Park’s “Decision to Leave.” Here’s the logline for the film as it hit the market:

In the lawless frontier of the late 19th century, a small town sheriff and a mysterious stranger form an uneasy alliance to track down a ruthless gang responsible for a brutal robbery and massacre, leading them into a dangerous confrontation with a Native American tribe and a descent into their own personal madness.

The film is written by Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk”) with rewrites by Park, who is also producing alojng with Brad Fischer (“Zodiac”). Jisun Back for Moho Film, Mike Medavoy, and Georgia Kacandes are executive producers on the film. Clockwork is planning a theatrical release. WME Independent and CAA Media Finance co-repped sales rights.

Neon of course released Park’s last film “No Other Choice,” so a reunion, just as was the case with Baker and his next movie “Ti Amo!,” makes a lot of sense. That film made $40 million at the box office worldwide but missed out on an Oscar nomination, so it will be interesting to see what Park can do with a major studio marketing push. “Brigands” would also be his first English-language film since 2013’s “Stoker.”

A lot of the plans for this film and others that will inevitably be on Clockwork’s slate depend on Warner Bros.’ future under the wing of Paramount Skydance, but it’s clear that the powers that be are working to make an impressive and buzzy slate too good for Paramount to move on from. Until then, the re-release of “The Devils” comes out in theaters for a one-week special engagement this October.

Canada’s Big Canary Options Horror ‘Elise’; Sets Distribution

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Canadian producer Kim Yu is expanding her development and production activities at Big Canary Productions, an offshoot of her Toronto-based production services company Blue Moon Communications.

Yu has optioned the original screenplay for psychological horror Elise by Guyanese Canadian screenwriter Amir Bacchus; attached Chris Alexander to direct, and also sealed a deal for Equinoxe Films to release the finished film in Canada.

Alexander, whose credits include arthouse indie genre films Blood for Irina, Queen of Blood, Necropolis: Legion, Space Vampire, Parasite Lady and Drakulon, is also known as a former editor-in-chief of horror fanzine Fangoria.

Currently in development in Canada, Elise blends supernatural and psychological horror with an emotionally driven story about grief, obsession and the inability to let go.

The film follows Marlon Reid, who, while recovering in hospital after near-fatal heart surgery, forms an unexpected connection with fellow survivor Elise Carter, a woman whose life becomes inexplicably intertwined with his own.

When that connection is shattered by loss, Marlon’s grief opens the door to something far more malevolent. Haunted by memory, guilt and an unknown presence, he is forced to confront the terrifying consequences of refusing to let go of the person he loves.

“What drew me to Elise was the way Amir uses the language of horror to explore something painfully universal, the fear of losing someone and the dangerous places that pain can take us,” said Alexander. “There’s a tragic romance beating at the heart of this story, but surrounding it is something increasingly strange, surreal and nightmarish.

The deals were struck during the 2026 Toronto Internation Film Festival’s inaugural TIFF: The Market.

“Shifting more of my focus to Big Canary feels like a natural next chapter for me,” said Yu. “My career has allowed me to work across so many different parts of the filmmaking process, and I’ve always enjoyed working closely with filmmakers and helping build projects from the ground up.

“Elise represents exactly the kind of project I want Big Canary to champion: distinctive, character-driven storytelling with a strong creative point of view and the potential to connect with audiences well beyond Canada.”

Equinoxe Films has acquired the Canadian distribution rights to Elise, targeting a theatrical release in Q4 of next year.

“Elise is a chilling and moving story and I am excited to be a part of this journey, with this team. Equinoxe is looking forward to sharing this dark, elegant film with audiences across the country,” says Michael Mosca, President of Equinoxe Films.

Yu’s career spans publicity and distribution, production and unit management, and line producing and producing across film and television.

Her recent credits include Finch & Midland, the Hong Kong-Canadian collaboration written and directed by Timothy Yeung and starring Anthony Wong, Nina Paw and Patrick Tam. The film premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and later opened in the Top 5 at the Hong Kong box office before receiving a Canadian theatrical release in 2026.

Yu’s other work includes unit management on the Netflix limited series I Will Find You; line producing The Swearing Jar and producing a slate of Tubi Originals.

BBC Poirot Series Casts Katherine Parkinson & Toby Stephens

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: The BBC and BritBox’s Poirot series Hercule has unveiled more cast including Katherine Parkinson (Rivals), Omari Douglas (Black Doves) and Toby Stephens (Jane Eyre).

As with previous cast releases, the trio’s roles are being kept under wraps, but they come as the BBC and BritBox reveal the second book to be adapted for Mammoth Screen’s TV show will be Agatha Christie’s Peril at End House, following Lord Edgware Dies. The third novel the show will be part-based on is still to be revealed.

Other new cast include Jessica Alexander (The Beauty), Honor Swinton Byrne (The Souvenir), Paul Forman (Emily in Paris), Arthur Hughes (Shardlake), Ralf Little (Death in Paradise), River Medway (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK) and Natalie Quarry (Call the Midwife).

Deadline revealed earlier this year that Hercule was in the works and Edward Bluemel is playing the lead. The six-episode show is billed as “an intimate study of Hercule Poirot” while introducing the world’s greatest fictional detective to “future friends, allies and one particular nemesis.” Intrigue surrounds who will play which roles, and the identity of the nemesis. Peril at End House features Christie fan favorites like Arthur Hustings and Chief Inspector Japp and is set in Cornwall, where Poirot and Hastings meet a young woman who is persuaded that someone is out to kill her.

The show is currently filming in Liverpool and comes as Christie adaptations continue to rate, with Netflix’s Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials recently drawing in big audiences.

Written by Benji Walters (Code of Silence), the first two episodes are being directed by Jonny Campbell (Am I Being Unreasonable?), with Chanya Button (Code of Silence) and Alrick Riley (Bridgerton) directing the second two episodes and the final two episodes respectively. The executive producers are Walters and Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited, Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Nick Lambon for the BBC, and Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar, and Stephen Nye for BritBox. Charlie Palmer (A Woman Of Substance) serves as series producer. Fifth Season is handling global distribution.
