‘Daily Show’ Says California’s ‘Rizz-Less’ Democratic Candidates Open the Door for a Republican Governor | Video

Published

on

“The Daily Show” correspondent Jordan Klepper says that California’s Democratic gubernatorial candidates, eyeing to take Gov. Gavin Newsom’s seat, are in trouble because they have no charisma.

New polling showed that former Fox News host and Republican candidate Steve Hilton remains in the lead with 16% of support with billionaire hedge fund businessman Tom Steyer behind him with 15% of the vote.

“This is California,” Jordan Klepper said. “All these Democrats have to do is find a candidate with the slightest bit of charisma, and this thing’s just over.”

The comedian showed a clip of Xavier Becerra, former secretary of health and human services under President Joe Biden, who polled in third place behind Steyer this week. The TikTok-style video showed Becerra tripping over his words as he slurped on a slushee drink after a session talking about the governor’s race.

“Yikes. This feels like running into your math teacher at the mall,” Klepper said.

He then showed a political ad from billionaire Democratic candidate Steyer in which he imitates the iconic “Love Actually” sign moment. Klepper sarcastically joked that the ad made him think he may prefer the original holiday film.

The next Democratic candidate was the only female candidate in the race. Katie Porter. He showed a clip of when she threatened to end an interview early with CBS News California Investigates correspondent Julie Watt from last fall. Another clip depicted Democratic candidate and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan introducing a hologram of himself at the airport.

“You see the problem? All these Dems are rizz-less,” Klepper said. “And it’s left the door open for Republicans like this guy, Sheriff Chad Bianco. His vibe is kind of all the Village People at once.”

“The Daily Show” host then introduced one of the leading candidates in the primary race Hilton, clarifying for his audience he is not of the Paris Hilton hotel fame. He also noted that despite being endorsed by President Donald Trump, there is a decent chance that he could take charge of the Golden State.

“So you must have a background that resonates right?” he asked.

Klepper showed one of Hilton’s political advertisements to the audience, revealing he’s not only British but has only lived in the United States since 2012 and has been a citizen since just 2021.

“‘The Office’ came to America before he did … Is he running for governor or govnah?” the host joked in a British accent.

“He decided to enter the race on the flight over,” Klepper added. “‘Do you have anything to declare at customs?’ Yeah, my candidacy for governor of California.”

Klepper concluded his bit by acknowledging, despite the lack of “rizz” in the gubernatorial race, whoever takes charge will play a major role in shaping American lives moving forward, so the race is worth paying attention to.

“You might not care which of these freaks or duds gets elected as governor, but you should,” he said. “Because of California’s size and economic might, their laws often affect the rest of us.”

‘They Follow’ Cast Adds ‘Landman’ Star James Jordan (EXCLUSIVE)

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: James Jordan, who stars alongside Billy Bob Thornton on Paramount+’s Landman, has been tapped for a role in They Follow, David Robert Mitchell’s long-anticipated Neon sequel to his critically acclaimed 2015 horror film It Follows, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Neon declined to comment. Character details are being kept under wraps, as is the plot of the sequel. All that’s known thus far is that it takes place a decade after the events of the original film.

Maika Monroe has returned to star alongside newcomer Naomi Ackie. The cast also includes Jackie Earle Haley, Justine Lupe, Anna Mirodin, Jayne Taini, Michael Gandolfini, Tom Pecinka, Melora Walters, Ben Krieger, Natalie Shinnick and Jan Hoag.

Mitchell has once again directed from his own script. He’s also producing alongside Harvest Hill Entertainment’s Jake Weiner, Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, Northern Light Media Ventures’ Erik Rommesmo, FirstGen Content’s Mike D’Alto and Randal Sandler, Curious Gremlin’s Scott Aharoni and Sinan Eczacıbaşı, Kaplan Morrison’s David Kaplan, Rebecca Green and Laura Smith. Mark Bennett handled casting.

Neon reps worldwide rights to They Follow and will release the film in U.S. theaters. Neon International is handling foreign sales. Deals were negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by Hayden Goldblatt of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, Eugene Pikulin of Bruns Brennan Berry Pikulin Jacobs, Michael Weiss of Concentric Law, and Wifreddy Chiang of Baseline Media.

It Follows was snapped up by Radius-TWC after premiering to rave reviews at Cannes in 2014. The psychological horror film stars Monroe as Jay Height, a college student who, after a sexual encounter, becomes the target of an unstoppable supernatural entity. As the entity takes the form of random people, slowly but relentlessly stalking her and her friends through the Detroit area, she grapples with the fact that she will only be able to escape the curse she has inherited by passing it on to someone else through sex.

Regarded as one of the best horror films of the 2010s, It Follows grossed around $23M against a reported budget of a little more than a million, launching Monroe toward stardom and making a studio director of Mitchell. Pic’s cast also included Keir Gilchrist, Daniel Zovatto, Jake Weary, Olivia Luccardi and Lili Sepe.

Best known for his turn as petroleum engineer Dale Bradley, right-hand man to Thornton’s Tommy Norris, on Paramount+’s hit drama Landman heading into its third season, Jordan is a clear favorite of co-creator Taylor Sheridan, who’s cast him in everything from Yellowstone and 1883 to Mayor of Kingstown, Those Who Wish Me Dead and Wind River. Currently, Jordan also stars in his series Lioness. Upcoming, he’ll be seen in Billings, an indie healthcare drama marking the directorial debut of actor Alexander Ludwig. He is repped by Elevate Entertainment and Jamie Freed Management.

Why ‘Damn Yankees’ Is Partnering With Major League Baseball

Published

on

On Sunday, Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Hough, and the cast and creative team behind “Damn Yankees” sat in the press room of Yankee Stadium answering questions from a group of theater journalists who looked as natural in the setting as Ethel Merman and Patti LuPone would in the dugout during the playoffs. “It’s a little surreal for all of us to be here,” Rick Miramontez, the publicity wizard behind the event, confessed shortly before the press conference kicked off.

An intense rainstorm spoiled some of the fanfare around the announcement of a revival (one of the stars, Austin Scott, was supposed to throw out the first pitch), but the day’s larger point was clear. It’s never been harder to launch a Broadway musical, and the Great White Way could use all the help it can get. Enter the Bronx Bombers and Major League Baseball, which, in a first, will partner on the show along with its Emmy Award-winning production label MLB Studios.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to get asses in seats,” Harris said. “It’s really the opportunity to give people who don’t normally go see theater a reason to go. If this will allow arenas full of people…to know that seeing Broadway is something that is accessible to them and ideally awesome, then that would be a great thing.”

For the past year and change, a lot has been written about the challenges facing musicals. Such shows typically carry production budgets of $15 million to $20 million, which means that in order to recoup their investments, they have to play to full houses. Harris and Hough are stars who bring passionate fan bases from their stints on “How I Met Your Mother” and “Dancing With the Stars,” but the economics are daunting.

Acclaimed revivals like “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” wrapped up their runs early after ticket sales began to soften, while new musicals like “The Queen of Versailles” and “Beaches” bombed. More recently, “Two Strangers Carry a Cake Across New York” announced it would close shop in November despite rave reviews. Yes, some of the biggest hits on Broadway remain long-running musicals like “Hamilton” and “The Lion King,” but no new juggernauts have emerged to challenge them since COVID upended the business.

Partnering on a musical may be new for baseball, but the business has integrated its talent with promising results. “Buena Vista Social Club” recently sold out shows after tapping former New York Mets player José “Candelita” Iglesias to appear as the narrator for a limited run, and the production will enlist former Yankee Bernie Williams and his guitar to join the show’s band next month.

MLB’s involvement in “Damn Yankees” wasn’t immediately clear, but baseball will help promote the show to its fans. As for the musical, it’s getting a facelift. The setting will move from the 1950s to 2000, as the Orioles try to take on the Yankees, who were enjoying a period of dominance that saw them win four straight World Series. The creative team behind “Damn Yankees” made it clear that they were committed to being true to the sport. Miramontez said that a technical adviser had been hired, and Scott said he’s been studying game footage as he prepares to play Joe Boyd, a thwarted fan who sells his soul to carry the “Birds” to glory.

“I am kind of coming into this world, learning the baseball world, the culture, and the language of the sport,” Scott said, adding, “I’ve already been watching a lot of highlight reels and a lot of footage, especially of Aaron Judge.”

On Sunday, Harris, Hough, and Scott met Judge and the rest of the team in person after braving the downpour to shoot promotional images on the field. Harris explained why they had made the trek to the Bronx by recounting the entire plot of “Damn Yankees” to members of the clubhouse.

“I just didn’t know if they knew the context of meeting us, like why we were here,” a sheepish Harris admitted.
