Manchester United: Youri Tielemans on his dream move, injuries and playing with Marcus Rashford

Published

on

Tielemans is thoughtful though, and expansive in his answers, even if sometimes what he says is not quite what you expect to hear.

One of those is around the length of his career and the number of games he has played.

He made his professional debut for Anderlecht at 16. He has played 668 games for club and country and had to pull out of Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final clash with Spain last month after experiencing an issue in the warm-up.

“I feel very good, actually,” he said.

“In that last game, it was just an overload of too many games; too many minutes. Unfortunately, my body could not cope with it anymore.

“We played 120 minutes against Senegal, then played the US a few days later, three days after that we played against Spain.

“In the warm-up, my body just switched off for some reason.

“I do not think I am a player that absolutely needs a rest. Obviously, there are a lot of games, and the manager needs to manage the team, but when I am good, I am good.

“When it does not go well, I will know straight away and I will alert the manager. But it does not happen often.”

Ipswich Town have reached an agreement in principle to sign Julio Enciso from Strasbourg.

Enciso, 22, joined Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg from Brighton & Hove Albion in September 2025 and scored 12 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions last season.

Prior to that move, the Paraguay international, who represented his country at this summer’s World Cup, spent six months on loan with Ipswich during the second half of the 2024-25 season, when they were relegated under then-head coach Kieran McKenna.

McKenna led Ipswich back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, winning promotion last season after finishing second in the Championship, before stepping aside.

The Northern Irishman has since been replaced by Gary O’Neil, the former Strasbourg coach, under whom Enciso worked last year.

Any deal remains subject to a final agreement and Enciso undertaking a medical. If completed, he would become the newly-promoted club’s eleventh new signing of the summer, following — among others — Fulham pair Issa Diop and Sasa Lukic, Toulouse forward Emersonn, and former Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu.

Aston Villa hold talks with West Ham over Aaron Wan-Bissaka transfer

Aston Villa have held exploratory talks with West Ham United over a move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The 28-year-old is among Villa’s list of targets for the right-back position, which has been identified as a key position to address this summer as the club seek to provide competition for Matty Cash.

A move for Emerson Royal, the Flamengo right-back formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, did not materialise while Villa’s Kosta Nedeljkovic has interest from Scottish club Rangers and elsewhere.

The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on July 7 that West Ham would be open to selling Wan-Bissaka this summer, and valued the former Manchester United defender at £25million ($33.5m).

His contract at the London Stadium runs until 2031, having signed a seven-year deal upon joining from Manchester United in a £15million ($20.1m) deal in August 2024.

Wan-Bissaka started all four of DR Congo’s matches at this summer’s World Cup, helping his nation to a 1-1 draw with Portugal, while they led England until the 75th minute in the round-of-32 before Harry Kane’s double turned the tie around.

Wan Bissaka, who played 190 games for Manchester United across five seasons, made 25 league appearances for West Ham last campaign as they suffered relegation to the Championship. The east London club will play second-tier football for the first time since 2011-12.

He started two of West Ham’s final seven matches of the season, displaced by Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back, after the former Southampton defender also covered the position when Wan-Bissaka represented DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Wan-Bissaka has made 65 appearances across his two seasons at West Ham, having previously played 190 times for Manchester United, where he won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
