Bill Maher called out the fans of admitted killer Luigi Mangione, roasting the “Mangionistas” for taking his Friday guilty plea “hard.”

“Speaking of the eat the rich people, Luigi. We have Luigi fans here?” Maher said during his monologue for “Real Time” Friday night. “Luigi Mangione, the guy who was getting the run around from the healthcare system about his bad back. So, he murdered a healthcare executive randomly. That guy. He pleaded guilty in court. He said, ‘I shot Mr. Thompson and I knew what I was doing.’”

As Maher went on, he shouted out Mangione’s fans, known as “The Mangionistas,” who apparently struggled to embrace the controversial figure’s guilty plea.

“That’s what they call the groupies outside the courthouse,” Maher said. “They took it hard. One of them said, ‘I don’t think this is a concession or admission of guilt.’ Bitch, he just said that he did it, okay?!”

He added: “On the bright side, you’ll always know where he is when you call.”

Maher’s commentary came hours after Mangione pleaded guilty on federal charges tied to the 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In a New York City federal courthouse, Mangione pleaded guilty to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death.

“I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan,” Mangione said in his statement to the court Friday morning. “I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or bodily injury. I knew what I was doing was illegal.”

Mangione also shared that he had 3D-printed a gun before putting a silencer on it. He currently faces up to life in prison, with his sentencing scheduled for Dec. 18.

Mangione’s state murder trial is slated to begin with jury selection on Sept. 8. Though, his defense team has moved to dismiss the state’s charges, citing double jeopardy grounds.

At its D23 fan event on Friday, Disney offered up a first look at its upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled.

The clip began with a shot of Teagan Croft, who is playing Rapunzel, from behind, with her long blonde hair cascading over cobblestone streets. The footage then cut to Kathryn Hahn as the duplicitous Mother Gothel, before Hahn took the stage to thank fans for manifesting her casting. The star joked her character “may be a little overprotective, but that’s because she cares so much” and added, she’s “the best kind of villain, the kind who thinks she’s actually a hero.” Croft and co-star Milo Manheim also sent a virtual message, appearing in costume as they said hi to fans from their set in Spain. The studio also announced a release date of March 31, 2028.

Netflix hit back at Tyra Banks’ lawsuit Friday, filing a motion to dismiss that argued the supermodel’s issues with the streamer’s “America’s Next Top Model” docuseries did not amount to defamation.

Banks sued Netflix and “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model”  directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan for defamation back in June, where she alleged that she was falsely depicted as insensitive toward an “ANTM” contestant. Banks claimed she gave a three-hour interview for the series in question, but producers chose only to use around 16 minutes of her answers.

Netflix’s legal team pushed back on this narrative, noting in their motion to strike that Banks’ issues with “Reality Check” did not amount to defamation and that the reality TV host made “the same kinds of editorial decisions” on her show.

“Banks understands editorial discretion,” the Friday filing noted. “She created, hosted and executive produced 24 seasons of ‘ANTM,’ making the same kinds of editorial decisions she now attacks — what footage to include, what to omit, and how to present competing narratives. The Documentary simply turned that editorial lens back on ‘ANTM’ and Banks. Her disagreement with the resulting portrayal does not make it defamatory.”

On “Reality Check,” Banks was asked if she remembered contestant Shandi Sullivan, prompting the media figure to look up at the ceiling and say, “Um.” The episode then cut to credits. Banks alleged this edit was meant to make it seem as though she did not remember a contestant who later claimed she was assaulted during the show’s Season 2.

However, Netflix’s lawyers defended that her answer of “I do remember her story” was included at the start of Episode 2, adding, “A documentary expressly showing Banks remembering does not imply that she forgot.”

Netflix’s filing also defended that Banks signed a waiver, which gave up creative control of the series that highlighted problematic parts of “ANTM,” as well as Banks.

Netflix has openly stood by the series, praising Sivan and Loushy as “respected documentarians who thoroughly interviewed the people behind ‘America’s Next Top Model’” in a statement to media.

“Tyra Banks was given the opportunity to speak openly about her experience and the creators fairly presented her perspective alongside those of every other participant shown in this documentary,” the streamer added Friday night. ”We stand behind ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ and will continue to vigorously defend it.”

A representative for Banks did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
