Usyk vs Verhoeven: WBA gives permission for Oleksandr Usyk to defend world title

Published

on

The WBA has granted permission for Oleksandr Usyk to defend his ‘Super’ heavyweight title against Rico Verhoeven on 23 May, but under strict terms and conditions.

Unified champion Usyk, 39, faces former Glory kickboxing world champion Verhoeven at the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

The WBC previously confirmed that Usyk’s title would be on the line but there was uncertainty around whether that would also be the case with his WBA and IBF belts.

“Should Usyk emerge victorious, the bout will officially count as a successful title defence,” the WBA said.

“However, the title itself will not be at stake for Verhoeven, as he is currently not ranked by the sanctioning body.

“If the champion were to lose, the WBA championship committee would then review his status and determine the next course of action regarding the heavyweight championship.”

BBC Sport has contacted the IBF for comment on whether it will grant permission for Usyk to also defend that belt.

How will Tottenham build on successful WSL season?

Published

on

Tottenham were a bruised team last summer having finished second bottom in the WSL, with only relegated Crystal Palace conceding more goals in a poor campaign that led to the sacking of manager Robert Vilahamn.

Ho was appointed as Vilahamn’s successor, joining from Norwegian side SK Brann, who he led to the quarter-finals of the 2023-24 Women’s Champions League.

His impact was instant as Spurs won four of their opening five matches – the only defeat coming against champions Manchester City.

Impressive draws with Arsenal and Manchester United followed, meaning Spurs sat level on points with the Gunners in third at the start of 2026.

An aggressive pressing style, more creativity in possession and a structured defence were signs of improvement under Ho, as well as smart recruitment.

He was rewarded with a new long-term contract in March and – despite falling away from the top four in recent months – Spurs will go into the summer feeling positive.

Reflecting on the campaign, Ho said: “It’s been positive in numerous aspects, on and off the pitch. There has been a lot of learnings and development.

“It’s given us really strong foundations to build on in the future. I’m really pleased with how it’s gone.

“However, finishing fifth doesn’t win you anything. We want to win, compete and lift trophies.

“There is a lot of pride for the players and the staff for what they have done but there’s still a lot of work to do.”

Tottenham could finish within four points of Manchester United – where Ho worked as an assistant for three years – if they beat Brighton on Saturday (13:00 BST).

It would be a boost having suffered three successive WSL defeats in March and an FA Cup quarter-final exit to Chelsea last month.

“We had a really good start then a bit of a bumpy road in the second half of the season,” added Ho.

“How we faced the adversity and the reaction to that, means we have still performed well.

“Away from the pitch, [what has pleased me is] probably the infrastructure and processes we have put in place to allow this team to be successful in the long-term and to build momentum going into the summer.”

Published

on

Football is a big part of the holidays in the US and the schedule has been boosted with the NFL’s first game on Thanksgiving Eve, with the Rams hosting the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday, 25 November – another Netflix game.

That’s followed by a Thanksgiving triple-header, which begins with two divisional match-ups as the Detroit Lions host the Chicago Bears (18:00 GMT) and the Dallas Cowboys welcome the Philadelphia Eagles (21:25 GMT).

Then provided Patrick Mahomes makes a smooth return from injury, the star quarterback will renew his rivalry with Josh Allen as the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Buffalo Bills (01:20 GMT).

For the fourth straight year the Thanksgiving slate concludes with a Black Friday clash on 27 November as the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Denver Broncos.

That is one of 17 games to be streamed on Amazon Prime, which include the Houston Texans at the Eagles on Christmas Eve, plus the Baltimore Ravens at the Cincinnati Bengals on New Year’s Eve.

Netflix will again feature two games on Christmas Day, with the Bears hosting the Packers (18:00 GMT) before the Denver Broncos welcome the Bills (21:30 GMT).

The festive triple-header then concludes with a repeat of last season’s epic NFC Championship game, as the Seahawks host the Rams (01:15 GMT).

Hearts call for ‘fair opportunity’ in title finale as Don Robertson named as referee

Published

on

“That this has occurred at such a crucial stage of the season is particularly disappointing,” the statement read.

“We understand the club shares these concerns and has made representations to the authorities seeking clarification.”

In Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Motherwell, Hearts had two penalty claims turned down, the second one after referee Steven McLean had gone to the monitor to review it.

Manager McInnes raised the incident with head of refereeing Willie Collum and was “satisfied” he “was in agreement” with the Tynecastle club.

In Sunday’s 3-1 home win for Celtic over Rangers, the hosts’ Alistair Johnston was booked for a first-half challenge on Mikey Moore, with some pundits suggesting it should have been a red card.

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl indicated they would be raising that and Celtic’s first goal, citing a similar incident in Rangers’ December win over Motherwell in which the Ibrox side had a goal disallowed for offside.

Mallon added: “At a time when Scottish football is subject to heightened scrutiny, it is important that confidence in officiating standards is maintained.

“We therefore call on those responsible for the officiating of Saturday’s match to ensure that the highest standards of decision-making are applied, so that the game is decided by the players on the pitch and the team is given the fair opportunity it has earned.”
