California Attorney General Rob Bonta challenged claims that the states’ antitrust lawsuit against the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger is “anti-Trump.”

“Today’s order is a very clear indication that they are wrong, and that’s not true,” Bonta said to Politico after Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted a motion from 12 states seeking a temporary restraining order, subsequently pausing the deal. “Politics doesn’t fly in a courtroom. Politics doesn’t fly with the judge. Ideological difference, political grievance, political posturing gets thrown out of court. … Today’s court decision puts a lie to that allegation — clearly, succinctly — and it’s by someone else besides me.”

As Bonta went on, he stated that his critics have painted the states’ suit as “anti-Trump” and “anti-Ellison,” adding, “Well, a judge just found something very different than all of that.”

A representative for Paramount did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

As we reported earlier on Monday, California Judge Martínez-Olguín granted a request by 12 state attorneys general to issue a temporary restraining order against the pending $110 billion deal, halting it for two weeks.

The decision came after the attorneys general sued to block the merger last week, arguing it would create an entertainment giant that would control too much of the wide-release theatrical market, the submarket of “anticipated blockbuster films” and the basic cable bundle. Additionally, the group claimed that the deal’s approval could give the combined company increased leverage over movie theaters and cable distributors, lead to an increase in consumer prices and reduce content output.

Martínez-Olguín noted in her order issuing the TRO that the states had presented “compelling evidence that the combined firm resulting from the transaction will possess substantial market share in the wide-release theatrical distribution market.” And so, the court was persuaded that the proposed merger was likely to violate antitrust laws on that market share alone.

“Because the Plaintiff States make a strong showing that the Transaction will substantially lessen competition in the wide-release theatrical distribution market, they demonstrate irreparable harm would result if a TRO does not issue,” she wrote. “The Transaction would also be difficult, if not impossible, to unwind if permitted to proceed given the anticipated consolidation of operations, sharing of business-sensitive information, and potential termination or reassignment of employees. The Plaintiff States have sufficiently established that irreparable harm would result in the absence of a TRO.”

In response to the order, a Paramount spokesperson told TheWrap that it was “grateful” for the court’s “swift order” on the TRO, which “preserves the status quo while the Court considers the antitrust issues presented.”

“We are confident the evidence will demonstrate that the State AGs’ antitrust arguments are without merit as their alleged markets and claims of anticompetitive effects are without any basis in modern market realities,” Paramount added. “This merger is lawful, pro-competitive and will benefit consumers, creators, workers and the entertainment industry. We will continue to vigorously defend the transaction and will look forward to the hearings on the substance of the State AGs’ action.”

The David Ellison-led company has maintained that the deal with WBD stays on track to close by the end of the third quarter.

Jon Stewart tore into Donald Trump after he crashed Spain’s World Cup celebration, slamming the president for having an “overinflated ego.”

During Monday’s monologue for “The Daily Show,” Stewart addressed Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final match, which saw Spain triumph over Argentina with a score of 1-0.

“By the way, congrats to World Cup champions, Spain, España, clearly the best team in this year’s tournament,” Stewart said. “And they celebrated receiving the World Cup trophy with a trophy hoist, which is traditionally, it’s a moment that is shared really only by the players. A special moment that is only for the players.”

As footage from the celebration rolled, Trump was spotted lingering on the stage after handing off the World Cup trophy to Team Spain.

“What the f–k are you doing on the stage? It’s for the players. God damn,” Stewart erupted. “Why must everything be tainted by the overinflated ego of Cankles Muldoon? Why?! Why??”

Stewart then took a moment to roast Trump’s remarks following the match, sarcastically dubbing it as “really insightful post-game analysis.” Namely, Stewart got a kick out of Trump claiming the event was “four times greater than any FIFA ever held.”

“What’s a FIFA? How do you hold a FIFA? How could our FIFA be four times greater than any other FIFA?” he quipped.

News footage then showed Trump doubling down on the claim, adding that this “FIFA” (which stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association and translates to International Federation of Association Football) was “probably about five times” better. To which Stewart replied: “Is that what they told you? You know, they’re telling you that because everyone around you lies to you, because you’re a little baby.”

Though, it wasn’t just Trump who faced some ribbing from Stewart, as the late night personality also took aim at the World Cup halftime show.

“The Spain-Argentina final was like a reverse Super Bowl, where the players spoke Spanish and the halftime show was in English,” he joked. “They had Madonna and Justin Bieber and, for some reason, the Muppets. Holy s–t, is that The Count?”

“You got all the Muppets to choose from, why in God’s name would you make the vampire work during the day?” he continued. “Not only is it the bright glare of the afternoon sun, but for most of the game the score was 0-0. You’re taunting this poor bastard. ‘I sat in traffic for one, two, three hours for this? I’m burning alive.’”

Sadie Sink‘s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains a mystery ahead of the film’s premiere.

A new video teased Sink revealing three things about her character in the Sony Pictures production, but left audiences with the same doubts.

“Since the trailer dropped, I’ve seen so many theories about who I’m playing,” Sink said in the Instagram clip. “To match your incredible energy, I’ve decided to give you three exclusive, confirmed answers right now.”

Starting off the video, Sink said, “I can confirm I am not Spider-Man.”

She continued to joke and said, “I am not Aunt May,” the character that Marisa Tomei played and died in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“And third, I can definitely confirm that I am in this movie,” she added. “As for who I really am, you’ll have to find out in the theater.”

The Instagram caption for the post read, “We can confirm…she’s in this movie.”

In a recent interview, Sink opened up about the positive experience she had working with Tom Holland in the superhero film.

“It was interesting stepping into that space and being a little bit of an outsider in that way, but he could not have been more welcoming, and just the whole crew in general,” she told Nylon in an interview. “He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease.”

The logline for Spider-Man: Brand New Day reads, “It’s a brand new day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see.
