Every Spider-Man: Brand New Day Box Office Record So Far
Sony/Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” pulled off the seemingly impossible this weekend, passing the all-time domestic opening record of “Avengers: Endgame” with $360 million grossed in the U.S. and Canada.
But that’s not the only record that this historic blockbuster broke. En route to the second highest global opening of all time with $932 million, “Brand New Day” set dozens of other records in overseas markets and on special formats. By Tuesday, it will cross the $1 billion mark after just six days of theatrical play, and in the weeks to come, it will become the eighth film of all time and the first non-“Avengers” Marvel film to reach $2 billion worldwide.
Let’s break down all the achievements that Spidey has webbed up:
Highest domestic preview and opening day
Sony and Marvel’s big weekend kicked off with a $169.3 million domestic opening day that included $72 million from preview screenings. Those topped the previous records of $157.4 million and $60 million respectively earned by “Endgame.”
To be fair, “Brand New Day” had hundreds more screenings to break these records as it had early access screenings on Wednesday for Prime Video subscribers and started Thursday preview screenings at noon compared to 6 p.m. for “Endgame.”
But dozens of blockbusters have had preview screenings that have started earlier than 6 p.m. in the years since “Endgame” came out, and no film had gotten close to that $60 million record. With such overwhelming demand to see “Brand New Day,” pushing back the start of screen times was as much out of necessity as it was opportunity.
Opening weekend record for Dolby Cinema and ScreenX/4DX
Unlike all the Marvel films that came before, “Brand New Day” did not have Imax support on its opening weekend. That’s because Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” the first film shot entirely on Imax cameras, had a three-week exclusivity deal with the premium format company.
That steered much of the interest in Spidey towards other premium formats such as Dolby Cinema and CJ 4DPLEX’s ScreenX and 4DX, all of which reported all-time opening weekend records. Dolby reported that two-thirds of tickets for all of its screenings at its 177 U.S. auditoriums had been sold in presales even before previews began, pushing its grosses to $10 million for the weekend.
ScreenX and 4DX, meanwhile, combined for a record $31 million from 1,111 theaters worldwide, including a domestic record $7 million for ScreenX that was more than double the previous record of $2.7 million recorded by “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” earlier this year.
Overseas opening weekend records
Along with the domestic opening weekend record, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” set all-time opening weekend records in 19 other countries. That includes a $26.6 million opening in France, beating the $24.9 million opening of “Endgame,” along with record openings of $23.8 million in Brazil and $15.6 million in Spain.
“Brand New Day” also earned an opening of $31.8 million in India, becoming the highest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood production in the country.

‘Late Fame’ Review: Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee Independent Film
Late Fame which premiered a year ago this month at the Venice Film Festival is a gem. It is a movie about, among other things, discovery and rediscovery. It may be a year after critics first saw this movie that I am only just discovering it myself as it begins its theatrical engagements, but if ever there was a beguiling and enlightening film hiding in plain sight it is this one from director Kent Jones (Diane) and Oscar nominated screenwriter Samy Burch (May December).
Based on Arthur Schnitzler’s 1890’s novella, Burch has modernized it and changed the Vienna setting to New York City’s Soho district, a once bustling enclave for artists and poets, and now something quite different. Ed Saxberger (Willem Dafoe) has worked for the post office for 37 years, but in the late 70’s he was a published poet with a brief dance with notoriety, a couple of articles written about his modest papaerback book, now relegated to the back shelves of a dusty private bookstore, if you can even find it there. Meyers (Edmund Donovan) the leader of a young group of men with respect for those who came before and whose little salon competes with “influencers” tied to their iPhones in the same space, has indeed discovered Saxberger and intends to make him the group’s next project, an excavation of greatness somehow passed over but ripe for renewal.
Setting out to find Saxberger, he encounters this modest man whose current social interactions are with blue collar work colleagues at the local bar and a peaceful existence in his modest apartment. Friends only know Ed as a fellow postal worker, certainly not as a man who once wrote poems with the gift of Frost. But that was another life, another time, and so when Meyers invites Ed to his group it is meant with some resistance. He can’t even fathom how this guy even could find his book, much less want to praise it. Nevertheless he shows up and thus begins his relationship with the self-called Enthusiasm Society, a gathering of twenty-something admirers, if not much else, who call themselves intellectuals and reject technology in favor of art and poetry. Indeed their recognition of him as a kind of genius eventually wins over Ed who begins to remember the love for creativity that once drove his life in a very different era, a lost New York where art was prized.
And there also is Gloria (Greta Lee), the older female friend of the Enthusiasm Society, an actress and singer and somewhat tragic, if flamboyant personality whom they have also latched on to. Ed finds something in common with her, even if they are the exact opposites in demeanor. By her very nature she begins to light up his life especially when she agrees to perform his poetry at a show the Society is going to produce, one advertising new poetry from this lost genius.
What makes this film work as well as it does, even if inspired by material from well over a century ago, is first and foremost a truly splendid cast. Dafoe continues to be a miracle of an actor, never overplaying his hand here and believably embodying a man resigned to a different life than what might have been, a richly talented writer of long ago suddenly reawakened after putting it all in the past. His skepticism is real and so is his awareness that these new found admirers may not see him for who he really is and what his poetry is really about. Lee, so fine in a wide variety of roles from Past Lives to The Morning Show, is superb as a woman playing a role in life as well as piano bars. Fortunately she is no stereotype here as Gloria is a genuine talent herself, an exceptional performer as she proves singing Brecht and Weill’s “Surabaya Johnny” in a beautiful moment with Ed in the audience recognizing he is also seeing someone deserving of late fame herself. Unfortunately she has demons and Lee is truly stunning in a role that runs the gamut. Donovan is perfect as the leader of a group who essentially adopts artists for their own sense of worth.
Burch’s brilliantly witty, biting, and all-knowing screenplay never satirizes these characters or looks down on them in a movie Jones and his exceptional actors have blessed with sheer humanity and grace.

H.S. Naji, Jackie Langelier, Taylor Shung, Ethan Lazar.

BoxLunch Serves Up Exclusives for D23 in Anaheim
D23 (formerly D23 Expo) is a place where the world’s biggest Disney fans gather for a weekend full of announcements, informative panels and retrospectives dedicated to fan-favorite Disney moments. (If you’re wondering what D23 means, it is the official Disney fan club and named after the year that Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood. It used to have a physical magazine component but that has sadly been phased out.)
D23 happens every two years and this year’s installment is just a couple of weeks away. And one of the biggest components of the event is the exclusive merchandise. While the company has moved out small vendors, a controversial decision that has led to them setting up shop a few blocks away, it does mean that the big corporate partners will have more room to deliver items that you can only get by attending.
And one of those companies is BoxLunch, who will have a wide array of exclusive bags, pins and clothes. There will also, of course, be a specially-themed booth.
“This year’s theme is ‘BoxLunch Under The Bigtop,’ and we designed it as a fun, immersive walkthrough that puts our Disney products front and center,” Rick Vargas, senior vice president of Merchandise and Marketing at BoxLunch, said. “We want everyone stepping into our booth to feel like they’ve been transported straight to a carnival, packed with their favorite characters and next ‘go-to’ wardrobe staples.”
As for what to expect from said booth, Vargas explained, “Jackets, bags and pins are our top SKUs for D23 this year. With exclusives spanning Kingdom Hearts, Disney Princesses and ‘Cars,’ we’re bringing together totally distinct fan bases and showing just how big–and special–the BoxLunch community is.”
From what we understand, every day of the event will feature new exclusive pins that will be available for one day only and feature “premium details like sliding and dangling elements that bring your favorite stories to life,” along with products that you can purchase all weekend. Get a look at some of them below.

D23 takes place from Aug 14-16 in Anaheim, Calif.
