Published

on

An animated “Kingdom Hearts” series is coming soon, Disney announced from the Honda Center stage at the D23 convention on Friday night.

The show will be an anime based on the beloved video game franchise, and will debut on Disney Channel and Disney+.

The series, which is not yet titled, was developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. According to a press release, the series “reimagines the iconic adventure with a brand-new story that will expand on the universe of Kingdom Hearts while celebrating the characters that have captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world.”

“’Kingdom Hearts’ has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family. “There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably ‘Kingdom Hearts,’ while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”

The “Kingdom Hearts” video game franchise first launched in 2002 and quickly gained acclaim. It’s still going strong over two decades later, adding in fan-favorite IP from the Disney flywheel throughout the years.

This is the first time “Kingdom Hearts” has been adapted into a TV series or movie.

Ghost Market Is New Pixar Movie, Announced at D23

Published

on

Earlier this year, it was reported that Pixar had a new original movie, Ono Ghost Market, in the works based on Asian myths about supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact. It’s been titled Ghost Market and it’s coming out in theaters in 2028. Disney has March 10 on reserve for a Pixar movie that year.

Originally the project was intended to be a series, but then pivoted to a feature film. Footage today showed a young boy, Kyle, walking into a dark, empty kitchen. He’s just been forced to move to Hawaii by his family. He finds a bowl of warm soup that’s been readily made. But it’s a spooky place. “Hey, do you guys take Apple Pay?” he asks. We then see him on FaceTime telling us that the movie is about “hungry ghosts” and that Ghost Market isn’t like those other scary movies.

Disney Sets November 2029 Release For ‘Coco 2,’ Centered on a Teenage Miguel

Coco 2 is coming to life.

At the studio’s D23 fan event on Friday night, Benjamin Bratt was on hand to announce he would reprise his role as Ernesto de la Cruz in the sequel, which would be set a few years after the first film and see lead character Miguel as a teenager.

While to most fans the character is a hero, Bratt joked that “to some, he’s a little menace who ruined a career and destroyed a legacy. Ernesto de la Cruz is back for revenge, sending Miguel on an adventure back to the Land of the Dead.” The actor also revealed that the sequel is set for a November 2029 release.

The studio also revealed it would launch the original film the new original Pixar movie Ghost Market, about ghosts and a content creator who goes to Hawaii and discovers the crossroad of the living and the dead. It is expected for 2028. The clip showed a teenager wandering around the store as ramen bowls float into the air and come crashing down around the room. No cast or director was revelaed.

As for Coco 2, former Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced that it was in development last year, saying the movie was in the early stages and a theatrical release was set for 2029. The sequel will bring back members of the creative team from the original film, including director Lee Unkrichn and co-director Adrian Molina, and Mark Nielsen (of Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2) will produce.

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said at the time.

The original film was released in 2017, following a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician and is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead. While there he seeks out his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, to help him convince their family to allow him to play music. Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Bratt and Edward James Olmos led the voice cast.

Coco went on to win two Academy Awards for best animated feature and best original song, “Remember Me,” written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The sequel is not the only Coco expansion the company has in the works, as Disney is also planning a Coco attraction that is slated to come to Disney California Adventure.

First ‘New Simpsons Movie’ Footage Features Baseball Shenanigans

Published

on

At D23, Disney showed off the first footage from “The New Simpsons Movie,” which is headed to theaters next September.

And the footage was, thankfully, hilarious. A riff on “The Natural” (much like the iconic Season 3 episode “Homer at the Bat”), it shows that there is still plenty of gas in the “Simpsons” tank – particularly for movies.

The “New Simpsons Movie” footage showed Homer and the gang at a baseball game as they chase a runaway ball. Eventually the entire town is going for the ball, which goes into Moe’s Tavern, where his pickled eggs are mistaken for the ball. The chase continues – through an ER, down the street, into the Duff Brewery. The ball winds up in a giant tank of beer, with Homer chasing it through the refinery and eventually getting blasted out of a smokestack.

Homer winds up back in the baseball stadium, with Bart casually picking up the ball. Cue an enraged “D’oh!” — not only from Homer but from everyone who chased the ball with him.

The footage was mostly storyboards, mostly in color, but with temp music. At one point, you could hear a particularly memorable cue from Jan De Bont’s “Speed.”

The sequel was announced back in September 2025 with the tagline “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” By the time of its release, “The Simpsons” will be ready for its 39th season.

The original “Simpsons Movie” arrived in theaters on July 21, 2007. It grossed $536.7 million globally. In that film, Bart wrote on the chalkboard in the iconic opening credits gag that he “will not wait 20 years to make another movie.” Unfortunately, he ended up waiting 20 years and some change. Back to the chalkboard, Bart!

“The New Simpsons Movie” arrives on September 3, 2027.
