Marvel Cast More ‘X-Men’: Adam Driver, Inde Naverette, and More

On Friday, August 24, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige invited director Jake Schreier onstage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase Panel at D23 to finally announce the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the X-Men, now scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5, 2028.

The cast was led by Sadie Sink, who made her debut as the powerful mutant Jean Grey in this summer’s record-breaking hit “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and previously announced actors Kit Connor and Samara Weaving, who will be playing the characters Cyclops and Emma Frost, respectively. The big new additions to the team and to the D23 stage were recent “The Testament of Ann Lee” star Christopher Abbott cast as Professor Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men, “Obsession” breakout Inde Navarette cast as Rogue, newcomer Maya Boyd cast as Storm, and two-time Oscar nominee Adam Driver cast as the villain Mr. Sinister.

The news was a major step in a very long, very anticipated process of bringing the team to the MCU, with the Disney/Fox merger having been announced nearly a decade ago. Since finally inheriting the rights to the X-Men as part of the deal, Marvel films have, for the most part, only cast actors from the previous “X-Men” film franchise under Fox, from Patrick Stewart appearing in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” as Professor X, to Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as Beast in the final scene of “The Marvels.”

The real tipping point merging in two worlds was the 2024 film “Deadpool and Wolverine,” the third film in the Ryan Reynolds-led former Fox franchise, which used a mix of actors from Fox’s Marvel films, like Jennifer Garner as Elektra from “Daredevil,” and Dafne Keen as X-23 from “Logan,” with new characters from the world of the “X-Men” comics, like Channing Tatum as the mutant Gambit, and Emma Corrin as the villainous Cassandra Nova.

What is still unclear is how the MCU will usher out many of those Fox “X-Men” characters like Stewart as Professor X, or James Marsden as Cyclops that have already been announced as cast members in the upcoming December release “Avengers: Doomsday,” and begin replacing them with Abbott and Connor. Also to be answered: if there will be any actors from previous films staying on to play extremely popular characters that are as yet unannounced, like Wolverine and Magneto.

VisionQuest’ Trailer: First Look At ‘WandaVision’ Spinoff Starring Paul Bettany

It’s the beginning of the end for the WandaVision trilogy.

Nearly two years after the series finale of Agatha All Along — and 5½ years after WandaVision ended — the Disney and Marvel released the first trailer for VisionQuest on Friday at D23 in Anaheim. Have a look above.

Paul Bettany stars as Vision, a former Avenger who was introduced in 2015’s Age of Ultron killed in the 2018 Infinity War film but was resurrected without emotions or memories.

Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.

The VisionQuest also features James Spader as Ultron, Todd Stashwick as the morally ambiguous mercenary Paladin and Faran Tahir reprising his role of Raz from the MCU kickstarter pic Iron Man. The cast also includes Lauren Morais, Diane Morgan, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D’Arcy.

VisionQuest premieres October 14 on Disney+.

The series is a spin-off of Disney+ and Marvel Studios first series WandaVision. This was the first Marvel Studios series to hit the streamer and was not only a hit on the streamer but would go on to gain awards accolades that included a best limited series nomination. The series starred Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as as Wanda Maximoff and Vision.

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’: Ryan Gosling Movie Gets First Look at D23

We finally have some more details about the Shawn Levy directed, Ryan Gosling starring Star Wars: Starfighter movie after a first look was unveiled tonight at Disney’s D23 fan confab.

Previous details revealed that the movie was set a brand new galaxy in the Star Wars canon, free of Skywalker family plot-lines. The Jonathan Tropper penned screenplay is set at the future most point in the Star Wars timeline.

What we learned tonight is that Gosling plays a pilot Kade, a guy who has the swagger of his Drive persona, Driver. The footage begins with Flynn Gray’s young man walking into a rusty spaceship garage. He uncovers a spaceship (almost looks like a speeder). Gosling’s Kade enters and says, “Didn’t I tell you not to touch anything?”

The kid asks what it is. “It’s a decommissioned G17,” says Kade, “the fastest straighter ever built.”

While none of the characters we know from the Star Wars films, there’s a lot of touchstones, i.e. speeder bikes (zooming across swamps), big imperial looking starships and, remember the bridge that Luke Skywalker and Leia swing over? That bridge makes a cameo. As we knew from the first photo, the new Star Wars takes place on a sea-filled planet.

Star Wars: Starfighter comes out next Memorial Day weekend, May 28. Levy said it was the same date that the original Star Wars was released 50 years ago. After Lucasfilm deep-sixed with the lowest grossing live-action Star Wars movie this past summer in the $165M costing (before P&A), Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu, which bottomed out at $345M WW,the new hope is that Skyfighter will revive the franchise, thanks to the affable Gosling and Levy, the latter who delivered the highest grossing R-rated movie ever in Deadpool & Wolverine which made $1.33 billion.

Before showing any footage of Starfighter, Levy showed footage of young Gosling from Mickey Mouse Club. Gosling was also on stage tonight, wowing fans.

‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Season 2 Trailer: Disney+ Series Back After Nearly 3 Years

It’s been quite a while since viewers were immersed in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka, going on three years, actually. New episodes won’t arrive until 2027, but the first trailer premiered Friday at D23 in Anaheim. Check out the clip and new poster below, along with a first-look photo above.

Season 2 continues the story of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and her extraordinary journey beyond the known galaxy. As Ahsoka and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) travel across a mysterious and perilous world to find their way home, their friends must face the powerful Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and his sinister allies, who seek to plunge the New Republic into war.

The cast also includes Rory McCann as evil former Jedi Baylan Skoll (taking over for the late Ray Stevenson, who played the character in Season 1) and Hayden Christensen returns as Anakin Skywalker — a role he played is the Star Wars prequels and TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi — along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eman Esfandi and Ivanna Sakhno.

Ahsoka won a 2024 Emmy for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and had four other nominations in crafts categories.

The Season 1 finale, which aired way back in October 2023, saw Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) make the jump to hyperspace via a space loop, where Ezra (Eman Esfandi) stowed away, while Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu) were marooned in the green tundra tumbleweeds of Peridea in a galaxy far, far away. Thrawn’s m.o. is to reassemble the Empire aka “The Thrawn campaign,” which was a series of military and political maneuvers by the blue man to restore the Empire and implode the New Republic.

Dave Filoni created and writes the series, which returns for Season 2 early next year on Disney+.
