We finally have some more details about the Shawn Levy directed, Ryan Gosling starring Star Wars: Starfighter movie after a first look was unveiled tonight at Disney’s D23 fan confab.

Previous details revealed that the movie was set a brand new galaxy in the Star Wars canon, free of Skywalker family plot-lines. The Jonathan Tropper penned screenplay is set at the future most point in the Star Wars timeline.

What we learned tonight is that Gosling plays a pilot Kade, a guy who has the swagger of his Drive persona, Driver. The footage begins with Flynn Gray’s young man walking into a rusty spaceship garage. He uncovers a spaceship (almost looks like a speeder). Gosling’s Kade enters and says, “Didn’t I tell you not to touch anything?”

The kid asks what it is. “It’s a decommissioned G17,” says Kade, “the fastest straighter ever built.”

While none of the characters we know from the Star Wars films, there’s a lot of touchstones, i.e. speeder bikes (zooming across swamps), big imperial looking starships and, remember the bridge that Luke Skywalker and Leia swing over? That bridge makes a cameo. As we knew from the first photo, the new Star Wars takes place on a sea-filled planet.

Star Wars: Starfighter comes out next Memorial Day weekend, May 28. Levy said it was the same date that the original Star Wars was released 50 years ago. After Lucasfilm deep-sixed with the lowest grossing live-action Star Wars movie this past summer in the $165M costing (before P&A), Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu, which bottomed out at $345M WW,the new hope is that Skyfighter will revive the franchise, thanks to the affable Gosling and Levy, the latter who delivered the highest grossing R-rated movie ever in Deadpool & Wolverine which made $1.33 billion.

Before showing any footage of Starfighter, Levy showed footage of young Gosling from Mickey Mouse Club. Gosling was also on stage tonight, wowing fans.

It’s been quite a while since viewers were immersed in the Disney+ Star Wars series Ahsoka, going on three years, actually. New episodes won’t arrive until 2027, but the first trailer premiered Friday at D23 in Anaheim. Check out the clip and new poster below, along with a first-look photo above.

Season 2 continues the story of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and her extraordinary journey beyond the known galaxy. As Ahsoka and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) travel across a mysterious and perilous world to find their way home, their friends must face the powerful Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and his sinister allies, who seek to plunge the New Republic into war.

The cast also includes Rory McCann as evil former Jedi Baylan Skoll (taking over for the late Ray Stevenson, who played the character in Season 1) and Hayden Christensen returns as Anakin Skywalker — a role he played is the Star Wars prequels and TV series Obi-Wan Kenobi — along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eman Esfandi and Ivanna Sakhno.

Ahsoka won a 2024 Emmy for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes and had four other nominations in crafts categories.

The Season 1 finale, which aired way back in October 2023, saw Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) make the jump to hyperspace via a space loop, where Ezra (Eman Esfandi) stowed away, while Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu) were marooned in the green tundra tumbleweeds of Peridea in a galaxy far, far away. Thrawn’s m.o. is to reassemble the Empire aka “The Thrawn campaign,” which was a series of military and political maneuvers by the blue man to restore the Empire and implode the New Republic.

Dave Filoni created and writes the series, which returns for Season 2 early next year on Disney+.

It was announced at D23 tonight that Jodie Foster and Walton Goggins are joining the voice cast of Walt Disney Animation’s Hexed.

The Oscar winner, who began her career at Disney in Candleshoe and Freaky Friday, said “I have never voiced a character in a Disney film until now.” She is playing Queen Celeste, the main baddie witch in the pic.

“What kind of part would a guy like me play?,” the Justified Goggins told the filled Honda Centre. It turns out that Goggins is playing a three-eyed green cat who dons a pink coat, Beef Roger, who is a witch’s sidekick. He winds up befriending Hailee Steinfeld’s young teen protagonist who has witch powers. She fends off against a gaggle of witches.

The movie has the prized Disney Thanksgiving box office opening slot, dated on Wednesday, Nov 25.

The Jason Hand-Josie Trinidad-Fawn Veerasunthorn directed movie follows an awkward teen and her Type-A mother learn her peculiarities might be magical powers, transforming their lives and revealing a hidden magical realm.

The voiceover cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Alan Tudyk, Rashida Jones, Stephen Fry, CeeLo Green and Tracey Ullman.
