‘Lanterns’ Star Kyle Chandler Weighs In On Premiere Twist

Published

on

SPOILER ALERT! This post contains details from the premiere of HBO‘s Lanterns.

All is not what it seems in HBO’s Lanterns.

The series premiered Sunday night, introducing audiences to Kyle Chandler as the legendary Lantern Hal Jordan and his trainee John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). Whatever plans Hal has for John’s training regimen are quickly interrupted by murder in Rushville, Nebraska, that Hal suspects has something to do with aliens.

Much of the first episode sets up the mystery that the Green Lantern and his protege are aiming to solve before ending with a twist. The final moments flash forward from 2016 (when Hal is training John) to 2026. Hal Jordan is dead — and John is ostensibly not the Green Lantern. The pair largely haven’t spoken in a decade, and Rushville’s sheriff has only summoned John after finding Hal’s body at the football stadium, where their intergalactic murder investigation began all those years ago.

This, Chandler explains, is what “opens up the whole mystery of the show.”

“The whole search is to find out what happened to him,” he told Deadline. “I like the fact that the show is non-linear and they’ve layered it like that.”

The reveal introduces audiences to the fact that there is not one murder mystery being solved throughout this series, there are two, and the events in 2016 clearly have some sort of influence on what’s to come.

Chandler likened the experience of telling a non-linear story to “three-dimensional chess” because of the layers involved in playing the characters’ emotional truth at any given moment in the series.

“Once you get all your pages taped on the wall and you know where all your scenes are, then you can take this page in the script and this page in the script, and figure out how to play with the material to reveal things differently, or to lay Easter eggs as the actor,” he said. “So, maybe later on, if not anyone else, I remember I did that. You can have fun doing things, but it’s complicated.”

Lanterns is from co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. New episodes air Sunday nights at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET on HBO and are available at the same time on HBO Max.

‘Lanterns’ Creators On OMG First Episode Ending With Hal Jordan

Published

on

Warning: This podcast and write-up has spoilers about the ending of tonight’s first episode of HBO/DC’s Lanterns

We can’t even say it in a blunt, straight sentence.

But, first episode in, something crazy happened to Kyle Chandler’s O.G. Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, in a time jump. It’s an outcome that sets up for an interesting timeline for the rest of the season. And we haven’t even seen him fully train the Green Lantern’s back-up guardian for Earth, Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. In addition, Lanterns hasn’t taken us to space out, nor has it rolled out Sinestro or Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner.

On tonight’s special episode of Crew Call, Lanterns co-creators and EPs Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof unpack that shocker ending for Jordan, and how and why the trio teamed up to revive Green Lantern for the new DC under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

What’s interesting is this: We’re given a hint about Jordan’s ultimate fate at the onset of tonight’s episode. That’s when he appears as a digital carbon copy (or “back-up”) to Stewart following the latter’s survival from a car-crash. That was a major tip-off as to how tonight’s episode would end. Why did Mundy, King and Lindelof leave a breadcrumb? Listen below.

Jordan might have his doubts about whether Stewart has the grit to wear the ring of a Green Lantern, but from the looks of it, he did quite well after having the jewelry tossed at him by the former. It was then that Jordan jumped out of the car, as it careened with Stewart off a cliff. The new recruit powered the ring to provide a cushion from the crash.

But, it’s clear as Jordan proved to local sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald): There are aliens in Rushville, Nebraska. Kerry learned this the hard way after allowing Jordan to question what appeared to be a local yokel over the mysterious shooting at a Rushville high school football game. The older Green Lantern taunted the alien so much, that the creature detonated itself, blowing a hole into the side of the jail.

Jordan and Stewart also got to meet Kerry’s powerful, rancher kingpin father-in-law, William Macon (Garrett Dillahunt). He takes a liking to at least Jordan. However –oops– Stewart slept with Macon’s wife! We’ll soon see whether Macon is a villain behind the scenes or an ally. The theory out there is that Macon is a future foe, harboring a big secret on his ranch. For the time being, he’s under an N.D.A. and can’t disclose to the Green Lantern corp what’s up his sleeve. Wow, an N.D.A., standing in the way of a potential villain’s plans. How often do you see that in a superhero story?

Green Lantern has long been prized by fanboy screenwriters, but a hard needle to thread. Mundy, King and Lindelof share with us their theories on why Green Lantern is hard to crack, in addition to its appeal. There was a 2011 movie, which on paper looked great with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell and a pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds in the title role. But at a $200M cost before P&A, Green Lantern was a red light at the box office, dimming with a $237.2M global gross. Greg Berlanti co-wrote that movie, and he tried to revive the property for Warner Bros TV before Green Lantern glowed into Lanterns. With Mundy involved, the series became akin to True Detective crossed with Green Lantern, grounding what is often a labyrinth storyline of galactic proportions.

Bob Iger Becomes Disney Legend: Harrison Ford, Robert Downey Jr Pay Tribute

Published

on

It’s been quite a week for Bob Iger.

First, the former Disney CEO managed to buy one of America’s most-coveted sports franchises — which wasn’t even officially for sale — and today he became a Disney Legend. For those unfamiliar with the honor, it is given to those who have “made a significant impact on the Disney legacy.” The equivalent in sports would be induction into the hall of fame or having your number retired. Iger certainly qualifies.

Iron Man himself was among those paying tribute to the longtime Disney leader. “Mr. Iger’s primary quality is courage,” said Robert Downy Jr. from the stage. The actor cited Iger’s “bold choices” and said that he succeeded through “empowering people.”

Also on hand was Harrison Ford who said to Iger, “I watched you make some impossible decisions. I’ve watched you protect creative people. I’ve watched you carry enormous responsibility with remarkable grace. But what I’ll remember most is the way you made people believe. That’s leadership.”

Ellen Pompeo observed, “It’s your integrity and your kindness that will be your legacy forever. And thank you, Bob, for reminding us that leadership is not only about making decisions, but about making people matter.”

Iger took the stage to a standing ovation and went on to praise Disney’s new CEO Josh D’Amaro, saying, “I think you’re wearing that title really well and I am so proud to call you my successor.”

You can watch both moments below.
