Golden State to host 2027 WNBA All-Star Game

WNBA All-Star weekend is headed to California.

The Golden State Valkyries will host the league’s midseason showcase in San Francisco in 2027. The league’s third California team (after the Los Angeles Sparks and the now-defunct Sacramento Monarchs) is the first to bring the All-Star Game to the Golden State.

The All-Star events will be held at the Chase Center, where the Valkyries have sold out every game during their two-year existence. The league set an All-Star attendance record at the United Center last month with 19,783 fans; the capacity at Chase Center isn’t as large — its sellout crowd seats 18,064 — but the environment at Ballhalla has been widely praised since Golden State joined the league in 2025.

Kayla Thornton was the first All-Star for the Valkyries in their inaugural season, and Gabby Williams was the franchise’s first All-Star starter in 2026.

The bidding process for the WNBA All-Star Game is quite different from the NBA.

Last year, the Chicago Sky were the only franchise to express interest in hosting the midseason exhibition game despite the league holding a formal bidding process, according to Front Office Sports. In 2025, the league recruited Indianapolis to host the All-Star Game. Chicago hosted the game twice in five years, and the Las Vegas Aces hosted three out of four All-Star Games before 2024.

Though historically the league has had to pursue a host, the Phoenix Mercury outbid three other interested groups in 2024.

Some hesitancy comes from the exorbitant cost of hosting. For example, the Mercury hosted the game in 2014 and, 10 years later, spent 200 times more to “turn the weekend on its head,” team president Vince Kozar said last year.

It’s unclear if the Valkyries outbid any other franchise for the 2027 game.

Bayern’s Jamal Musiala reveals treatment for ‘seizures’ after fainting in successive games

Published

on

Jamal Musiala has revealed that he is being treated for a “neurological dysfunction” after fainting in two successive Bayern Munich games.

On Tuesday, Musiala, 23, collapsed a few minutes after coming on as a substitute in Bayern’s pre-season friendly against Heidenheim. That followed a similar incident on Saturday, when the German international midfielder left the field after passing out in almost identical fashion during another friendly, against RB Leipzig in Munich.

On each occasion, club doctors rushed onto the pitch in response and Musiala was surrounded by teammates to protect his privacy. He was able to walk off the pitch on each occasion, albeit appearing dazed.

Following the latest incident on Tuesday, which occurred in the 69th minute of the game in Heidenheim, Musiala released a statement on his Instagram account, confirming the condition.

“I’ve been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the recent incidents, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim.

“I know these things might seem scary at first glance – but for me, they’re currently part of my everyday life. I’m receiving the best medical treatment and am very optimistic.”

Musiala also used the statement to alleviate concerns from fans.

“Importantly, there is no further health risk,” he wrote.

“In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to take on this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my everyday life and pursuing my passion for playing football. I have taken responsibility for this. Overall, I have a very good feeling and am on the right track.”

Bayern are due to begin the domestic season on Saturday, when they will face Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup. The club have not made any comment as to whether Musiala will be considered for that game.

USMNT’s Christian Pulisic returns to Milan training after World Cup injury

USMNT forward Christian Pulisic was reintegrated into first team training at Milan on Tuesday for the first time since his injury at the World Cup.

The 27-year-old suffered a micro-fracture and bone bruise in his right leg during his country’s 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the last 16 on July 7.

He was expected to be out for several weeks and has been recovering while Milan’s new coach Ruben Amorim has overseen pre-season.

Milan go to Torino on Sunday as the new campaign in Serie A gets underway.

Pulisic attempted to play through the injury in the second half of the Belgium game but was substituted just before the hour-mark of the 4-1 loss – which was notable for Folarin Balogun featuring after FIFA, the world governing body, overturned his suspension.

The game capped a frustrating tournament for Pulisic, who was withdrawn at half-time of the 4-1 win over Paraguay in the opening game with a calf injury, and did not score in four appearances at the finals.

“With one earlier and then another injury now, it just sucked. It was tough. It was difficult for me to deal with,” Pulisic said after the loss to Belgium.

Pulisic scored 10 times in all competitions for Milan last term, but didn’t manage a single goal after the turn of the year.
