Seahawks signing former Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs to bolster secondary depth: Source

Published

on

The Seattle Seahawks are continuing to add depth to their secondary, agreeing to a deal with former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs, according to a league source with knowledge of the deal but not authorized to speak publicly.

Diggs, 27, played eight games with the Cowboys in 2025 and one game with the Green Bay Packers. He didn’t record an interception last season for the first time in his NFL career.

The Seahawks have had a busy offseason in the secondary. They lost safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Riq Woolen in free agency, while adding a handful of depth pieces in safeties D’Anthony Bell and Rodney Thomas, as well as cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. They added safety Bud Clark and cornerback Julian Neal on Day 2 of the draft, as well as a couple of cornerbacks in the seventh round. They also recently signed Devon Witherspoon to the richest contract extension in NFL history at the position.

Seattle also agreed to terms with former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold. The 2024 first-round pick faces a murky playing future in the NFL as he faces kidnapping and robbery charges, which carry a potential sentence of life in prison.

Diggs was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft after a standout collegiate career at Alabama. Diggs burst onto the scene in 2021, nabbing a league-leading 11 interceptions and earning first-team All-Pro honors. He followed that up with three interceptions in 2022 and his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod.

Going into the final year of his rookie deal, the Cowboys signed Diggs to a five-year extension in 2023. He got off to a fast start again in 2023, recording a deflection in Week 1 as part of a 40-0 win over the New York Giants. In Week 2, he had an interception in a 30-10 win over the New York Jets.

The following week, Diggs tore his ACL in practice ahead of the team’s Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals. Diggs missed the remainder of the 2023 season, which led to a falling-out with the Cowboys.

Diggs began the 2024 training camp on the physically unable to perform list. He was eventually cleared for play and started the first 10 games for the Cowboys, recording two interceptions. He missed the following two games with a groin injury and was eventually placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury on the same leg as his ACL injury the year prior.

The following spring, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was critical of Diggs’ rehab process for his 2023 injury. The Cowboys also exercised a $500,000 de-escalator in his contract because Diggs chose to rehab his 2024 injury away from the team’s facility and not being present for 84 percent of the team’s offseason activities, which was spelled out in Diggs’ contract. Jones also began the 2025 training camp by expressing regret about moving quickly on giving Diggs a contract extension in 2023.

Diggs played eight games for the Cowboys in 2025, contributing to a historically poor unit. He was released with one game left in the regular season after he didn’t return from the team’s Christmas Day game against the Washington Commanders on the team flight, choosing to remain in Washington D.C. to be with family for the holiday. Diggs was claimed off waivers by the Packers, where he was active for the regular-season finale and the team’s wild-card playoff loss to the Chicago Bears.

Tour of Britain: Stage winner Lorena Wiebes on Finlay Tarling death

Published

on

British rider Hayley Simmonds, holder of three British time trial records, has been vocal about safety for cyclists, particularly after she was involved in the abandonment of the Tour of the Pyrenees in 2023.

At the time, riders complained roads were not closed to traffic for the three-day race in south-west France.

Several teams pulled out before governing body the UCI officially cancelled the race with the unhappy organisers describing the women as “spoiled children”.

“Our response at the time was, ‘No, we just expect to be safe’,” Simmonds said.

“When you go out on your bike, you expect to get home safely.”

Recalling the event in 2023, the DAS Hutchinson rider said: “We were riding along a road and suddenly there was a car moving towards us in the opposite direction, coming towards you.

“And then you’re half thinking about that, half thinking about the race, and no race is worth losing your life over.

“And that’s why on stage three, we chose not to race. But it shouldn’t come down to riders having to stop in the middle of a stage and have a discussion about whether they feel safe on their bikes or not.”

So what’s the answer? While races in road cycling are set up by independent organisers, the UCI oversees most of the events and can set standards for race management.

Simmonds agrees action needs to be taken by the sport’s governing body.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily right or fair to say that the responsibility lies solely with one particular party. But ultimately, they should have some set of mandates that say we need proof that rider safety has been considered, and we need proof that the roads will be safe to ride on.

“I think you need real collaboration between the UCI and the race organisers. The UCI needs to be asking questions of the race organiser. Like, what group have you got doing the road closures and looking after the race? Do they actually have legal authority to stop all traffic? Do drivers have to respect that?”

Following the fatal crash involving Tarling, the UCI issued a statement saying it was “deeply saddened, and extended its deepest condolences to Finlay’s family, friends, and team-mates”, but has not made further comment since then.
