‘Lanterns’ Team Recaps Season One Finale
SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details from Season 1 episode 8 of Lanterns on HBO.
“Are You Afraid?”
In Sunday nights season one finale of Lanterns, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) finally foudn the answer and his destiny as he spoke the words audiences have been awaiting all season to hear. Not only did Stewart accept his role as Earth’s protector by the end of the episode but also why Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) was killed and for what reason.
The finale starts off with a flashback to Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly MacDonald) picking up Jordan from prison following a ten year sentence after admitting to fault for the deadly attack on Rushfield. This is also the start of their relationship with Jordan weary about how the town will accept his return.
His instincts are correct as his house is firebombed with Jordan left for dead only to be saved by Kane’s son Noah (Shea Pritchard), who is not only able to regenerate Jordan’s burned skin but reveals his secret that he like his grandmother is a Man Hunter.
Flash forward to present day, where Stewart and Jordan’s hologram have captured Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) on a desolate planet and found out he has forged Noah a very powerful lantern that could be very deadly in the wrong hands.
Back on earth with the new Lantern in hand, Stewart is captured by Noah but ultimately released prior to Noah’s big football with the boy admitting he had killed the real Jordan after he had found out his plans for the new lantern. While watching the game, Stewart confronts Kerry about Jordan with her ultimately admitting she killed him after panicking when Jordan asks her to move away with Noah to protect from the Guardians.
Kerry asks to watch the end of the game before turning herself in and Stewart suggests that isn’t what Jordan would want before going on their separate ways. In the final moments, Stewart tells Guy Gardner he’s taking on the task of Guardian of earth and accepts role by speaking the oath that while rooted in the original has a new twist to it for this show before he sets flight.
Series creators and stars talked about the finale and the future of the show recently during a press conference.
When it came to Jordan’s Hologram, Chandler had an interesting outlook when it came to playing the real version of Jordan and the artificial one and felt that there was a paternal feeling to how he handled the material.
“I looked at the Hologram, as more of a younger Hal watching himself or the version of himself and the subconscious of how at the time he was put in that world,” Chandler said. “It’s almost like a father watching a son grow up in a way. He’s viewing himself, making these decisions and yet he gets to also converse with himself at the same time. So it is kind of rather complicated and I took the dialogue and did what I could with it to make it more complicated. So no one understood what I was doing and I thought maybe that might work out.”
The running theme of not just the episode but the season is the idea of fear and how characters handled and writer and co-creator Chris Mundy pointed how as a writing team they embraced that idea when writing this episode.
“If you’re gonna do this story, you’re gonna talk about fear and is it a good thing? Like Sinestro says it in the finale, fear is just emotional intelligence,” show co-creator Chris Mundy says. “Show me a species without fear, and I’ll show you something on the extinction list. We wanted this to be a really human story, we wanted to talk about these people with, that are very real, flawed or complicated who get to do these heroic things, and what would it actually mean? And so it was really important to us that to embrace that and treat that question really super seriously.”
The final moments between Stewart and Jordan clearly signaled this could be the last time the two may share a scene together going forward and Aaron Pierre talked about how after filming for so long the scene came together seamlessly when it came to how the characters felt about each other.
“We had filmed a lot by that point,” Pierre said. “Kyle and I on the day we’re thinking of all the months that we filmed prior to that, It’s all going into the moment. It’s all very loaded and it feels earned and it feels deserved. And hopefully the audience is open and receptive to that and allows it to resonate with different.”
Fans of the original comics are sure to notice a change in the famous Lantern slogan and Mundy said the idea of changing or “remixing it” had to do with the writers journey throughout the season and how it made sense to head in this direction by the end of it.
“I know Justin, one of the writers, was like, well, we’re not rewriting it, We’re remixing it.,” said Mundy. “I think the idea was, we sort of were taking a look back at what we’d done with the season and so John’s path was not the normal path. The ring didn’t choose him. He was interviewed. He was kind of raised for it. He was having to choose this thing. Then he decided not to do it, and then decided he needed to do it on his own terms. And so, it felt, we wanted to be true to the original, and respectful of the original, like his version is rooted in the OG version of it. We also wanted to tweak it to talk about the themes that we talked about, and fear, and make it, make it be a choice that he was choosing this thing, and not something he was like, Oh, I’m doing it because my parents wanted me to do it, or I’m doing it because of these things.”
As for everyone’s favorite pet plant Earl, not only is there signs we’ll see more of him next season, it seems when it comes toughness, he’s much more resilient then the man that feeds him.
“I think Earl is pretty Earl is pretty resilient,” co-creator and writer Damon Lindeloff said. “The botanical creatures of the galaxy can grow their own skin, I would imagine.”

Philippines’ Regal & Singapore’s Mocha Chai Team On ‘One For The Road’
EXCLUSIVE: Regal Entertainment producer Keith Monteverde is teaming with Singapore’s Mocha Chai Laboratories on coming-of-age drama One For The Road, directed by award-winning Filipino filmmaker Kip Oebanda (Bar Boys, Bar Boys: After School).
The cast is headed by Elijah Canlas, Gian Bernardino, Emilio Daez and JM Ibarra playing four high school best friends who begin to grow apart as they enter adulthood. They are joined by Nour Hooshmand, Sofia Trazona and Mika Reins, among other cast.
The project has been selected for the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP)’s International Co-Production Fund (ICOF), which supports international co-productions involving Filipino producers and filmmakers. The film is set to shoot entirely in the Philippines with a predominantly Filipino cast and crew.
Mocha Chai Laboratories will lead sound design for One For The Road. The company’s recent Singapore-Thailand co-production, Decalcomania, was nominated for Best Sound Design at the 2026 ContentAsia Awards.
Written by Kip Oebanda and Victor Villanueva (Patay na si Hesus), One For The Road follows four high school best friends entering their mid 20s who are finding that careers, relationships and the pressures of adulthood are pulling them in different directions.
When tragedy brings them back together, they embark on a road trip that tests their friendship and forces them to confront the grief they have long avoided. The film blends road-trip comedy with coming-of-age drama.
Mocha Chai Laboratories co-founder Michelle Chang said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Regal Entertainment, a company I’ve long wanted to partner with because of its extraordinary legacy in Philippine cinema. One For The Road is a universally resonant film and what better way to start this journey than bring together Regal’s deep connection with Filipino audiences and MCL’s experience in international co-production and post-production.”
For Monteverde and Oebanda, the material has a personal connection: “I am too familiar with what it feels like to be young, trying to ‘grow up,’ while the world around you keeps narrowing your options and closing doors,” Monteverde said. “One For The Road puts a spotlight on struggles that many young Filipino men carry quietly today.”
Oebanda added: “There seems to be a pervasive sense of loneliness and isolation in modern cities and in capitalist societies, and it is by design. This feeling of burnout and isolation is rarely addressed in our films. In the Philippines, men in particular are taught to suck it up and be strong or to not cry when they are emotional.
“I want to make a film that will reach the masses with the message that we need to support and check on each other and normalize talking about grief and our mental health struggles. We can make a hilarious, fun movie without skirting away or downplaying the issue at hand. After all, many people mask their grief through humor and adventures.”
One For The Road is currently in principal photography in the Philippines and is slated for release in the second quarter of 2027.

Channing Dungey Poised For Expanded Cable Role Post-Merger (Exclusive)
EXCLUSIVE: In addition to Casey Bloys and George Cheeks, the television/streaming structure of the combined Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery, recently named Skydance, would include expanded responsibilities for Channing Dungey who would be taking over the Paramount cable networks, I hear.
As Deadline revealed on Friday, Paramount’s Chair of TV Media Cheeks, who currently oversees CBS Studios, is poised to add oversight of Warner Bros Television and Paramount Television Studios, with Dungey, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros Television Group and US Networks, and PTVS President Matt Thunell both reporting to him alongside CBS Studios President David Stapf.
Continuing the streamlining trend of Skydance putting the combined Paramount and WBD TV studios under Cheeks, film studios under Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg and streamers (HBO Max and Paramount+) under Bloys, the company would be doing the same for the large array of cable networks it will own under Dungey, sources said.
She would be adding oversight of the Paramount cable nets, which currently report to Cheeks, including the “core four,” MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and BET, as well as VH1, Paramount Network, TV Land, CMT, Pop TV, and Logo TV.
That would be in addition to her current cable portfolio as head of US Networks, which features WBD’s linear TV brands, including Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, Investigation Discovery, TLC, Adult Swim, Animal Planet, Cartoon Network, HLN, OWN, TBS, TNT, Travel Channel, truTV, and Turner Classic Movies. Channing would be reporting to Cheeks on both the studio and cable network side.
Reps for Paramount and Warner Bros. TV declined comment.
With the move, Cheeks, whose domain is expanding to include two more TV studios and WBD’s cable portfolio as he takes charge of the combined company’s TV Studios and linear networks, including CBS and cable, is delegating day-to-day oversight of the cable brands, to Dungey, a highly respected veteran TV executive who had started executing her strategy for the WBD cable nets since adding the responsibility to her original job of running the Warner Bros. television studio almost two years ago.
The new studio structure reaffirms Paramount CEO David Ellison’s faith in former Skydance TV President Thunell who is put on the same level with two of the most decorated TV executives who have decades of experience in Channing and Stapf. Under the setup, Channing and Thunell, whose units both focus on development and production for streaming, are expected to work closely together.
Skydance is poised to unveil its official executive structure early next week, tied to Paramount’s acquisition of WBD closing Oct. 6.
Dungey added oversight of Warner Bros. Discovery’s basic cable networks at the end of 2024. She has led the unit through a period of uncertainty as WBD announced a plan to spin off its linear networks before Paramount emerged as a buyer for the entire portfolio. With her at the US Networks helm, Shark Week 2026 garnered its biggest ratings growth in over a decade, Puppy Bowl delivered its largest audience in eight years, Food Network achieved its first quarter of ratings growth in five years (in Q1 2026), and HGTV posted its strongest year-over-year gains this year in nearly two decades.
Among the programming synergies between the cable networks and WBTV under Dungey are a Bachelor Mansion crossover with HGTV and The Pitt season 1 getting a run on TNT.
