Celtic boss Martin O’Neill confirms decision to stay after reflecting on future over international break | Football News

Martin O’Neill has confirmed his decision to stay on as Celtic manager after reflecting on his future over the international break.

The Celtic manager admitted before the international break that he would consider his future after three consecutive defeats and talk to the board.

The 74-year-old has now declared himself up for the challenge after two defeats by Rangers sandwiched a Europa League setback against Ferencvaros.

When asked how ready and determined he was to lead the team forward, O’Neill told the club’s Celtic Player: “I am. I’m extremely prepared for it.

“We had a difficult week. It can happen, you can lose to your arch-rivals, you can lose a European game.

“It’s certainly not the end of the world, as it seemed to be described. But (I’m) ready to go.

“I did think I would take a little bit of time and it didn’t take me that much time to think about it.

“I want to lead the club, I want to try and win the league, which is what we set out to do, and just as determined now as ever before.

“It was a time of reflection for a moment or two and, yes, some things that you think about.

“But overall, I’m back, I’m raring to go and the team’s ready.”

Kick off 12:00pm

O’Neill, whose side face Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, added: “What you try and do is analyse the things that you’ve done or perhaps the things that you haven’t done.

“Throughout my managerial time, I’ve been exactly that. I think I look to myself, first of all. Maybe a wee bit different as a player, because I think I used to blame every other player for my own bad performance. But as a manager, you’ve got to look at yourself.

“And if you feel as if something has dropped away, of course you have to analyse it.

“Now, there wasn’t a great deal in some of the games. If we get the equaliser just after half-time in the Rangers game, totally different ball game, totally different. But it wasn’t to be. So you have to reflect on a few things like that.

“But overall, did the reflection, did all of that and a bit of self-analysing and just prepared for the battle.”

O’Neill also revealed that Jota had played 45 minutes of a training-ground friendly against Falkirk on Friday, as the Portuguese winger steps up his comeback attempts following 18 months out with a knee injury.

The Celtic manager has also been encouraged by Alistair Johnston and Callum Osmand getting back on the training pitch following hamstring injuries.

O’Neill added he would assess the fitness of Hyun-Jun Yang on Friday after the South Korea winger experienced hamstring trouble on international duty.

Analysis: Celtic were always calm over O’Neill future

Sky Sports News’ Anthony Joseph:

Martin O’Neill was never going to be sacked by Celtic after three humiliating defeats in one week before the international break – but there was a real potential of him walking away from the job.

After losing 1-0 at home to Rangers on September 20, O’Neill said he would take some time to think about whether he would continue as manager of the club.

Those comments sparked widespread reports and supporter speculation that the 74-year-old was on the verge of resigning.

Sky Sports News understands Celtic have always remained calm about the situation, despite the recent results. There was no appetite to pull the trigger themselves, especially when the teams are sitting at the top of the league.

That was proven when Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson backed O’Neill in a statement announcing the club’s latest financial results. He said: “We will now come together and support Martin and the players, as we focus our efforts on achieving success domestically and in the Europa League.”

The ball has been completely in O’Neill’s court and – as he has said today – he very quickly indicated his intention and desire to stay.

Celtic face a tricky next five games back – Motherwell away (live on Sky Sports), Benfica away, Hearts at home (live on Sky Sports), Celta Vigo at home and Hibernian away (live on Sky Sports).

It’s going to be an interesting month ahead for O’Neill and Celtic.

England’s most-capped active player Marlie Packer will miss the WXV Global Series matches against Canada and the USA in North America later this month.

Two-time World Cup winner Packer, who has made 119 appearances for her country, will remain at home with partner and Red Roses team-mate Rosie Galligan due to give birth.

England play Canada in Toronto and Ottawa on October 17 and 24 respectively before a game versus USA in New Jersey on October 30.

Delaney Burns, Haidee Head and Sophie McQueen are ruled out through injury.

The Red Roses played three times in September, beating Australia and New Zealand around a 26-26 draw with Canada in Exeter that ended the hosts’ 39-match winning streak.

Head coach John Mitchell said: Our last two Tests against Canada and New Zealand have been humdingers that could have gone either way. They were hugely important to our development towards [the 2029 World Cup].

“Playing quality opposition and learning to adapt under pressure will help us raise our level and improve our game.

“The 32 players travelling to North America have a great opportunity to elevate our connections as a squad because playing away from home requires togetherness.

“We have shown a real hunger to compete and improve, and we’re excited to rip into our preparations and continue our rivalry with Canada in Toronto.”

Carlos Alcaraz: Spaniard wins Japan Open in first final since coming back from injury lay-off for wrist injury | Tennis News

Published

on

Carlos Alcaraz has won his first final since coming back from a long injury lay-off for a right wrist injury with success at the Japan Open.

Alcaraz, who hadn’t played a showpiece since getting beat by Jannik Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters in April successfully defended the title he won last year in Tokyo defeating Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

The Spaniard returned from injury in late August and made a run to the US Open quarter-finals, where he lost to Ben Shelton in a match that ended at 3:33am.

Alcaraz was kept on his toes by Czech star Lehecka, but he did enough to earn his first tour-level trophy since Doha in February.

“It’s extra special to win a title again. It’s been a while,” said the 23-year-old Alcaraz, who is the first man to successfully defend his Japan Open title since Pete Sampras in 1994. “To win a trophy in my second tournament back is amazing. I didn’t find my best tennis all week, but I found the right solutions to win. Today I played the best match of the entire tournament. I’m really happy.”

Lehecka, ranked 19th, was sharper at the start and led 3-1 but Alcaraz, who has been wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm since his return, hit back to level at 3-3 and showed his full repertoire of crowd-pleasing shots in the tie-break, winning five points in a row from 2-4.

He made his move in the seventh game of the second set with a break to lead 4-3 and looked delighted after clinching victory.

Alcaraz began the season by winning his seventh major title to complete the career Grand Slam at the Australian Open and also lifted the trophy in his next tournament in Doha before his injury lay-off.

“Obviously a lot of negative thoughts come to your mind,” Alcaraz said, when asked if he ever feared not tasting trophy success again during his time out injured. “If you are going to come back healthy, if you are going to come back the same as I was before. If I will be able to hit the ball normally without pain at all. A lot of thoughts came to my mind, but I tried to put those thoughts away all the time.

“My team and I knew that if I come back I was going to feel 100 per cent. If I feel something, [the comeback is] not going to be anything, so I just have to go full for every shot, every ball, and I trust [my team], I trust myself, and it worked out.”

Alcaraz appears to be 'gathering momentum' towards the back-end of the season

Speaking on Sky Sports Tennis, British tennis star Liam Broady hailed the importance of Alcaraz’s victory in Asia, saying: “You can see the gratitude and jubilance in the team and for somebody like Carlos Alcaraz and his team. You might forgive them for not being too bothered about winning an ATP 500 but everything he’s been through the last few months, I’m sure this is a very special one for him.

“He was stuttering and struggling to find his game at the start of the week with a few three-set matches which he might normally have won easier.

“This is exactly what the future opponents of Alcaraz do not want to see is him gathering momentum whilst not potentially playing his best tennis.”

Highlights as Karolina Muchova hugs Naomi Osaka after winning a brilliant contest at the China Open

Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova came through a thrilling fourth-round encounter at the WTA China Open, denying Naomi Osaka from a break down in both the first and third sets and eventually sealing her ninth match point to advance 7-5 1-6 7-6 (9-7) in a little under three hours.

“I honestly didn’t even believe I will finish the match,” Muchova said in her on-court interview.

“So many match points, I didn’t know how many. After a match point I was like, OK, I’m going for it, but then I think she always played great and steady, and didn’t make mistakes – unlike me, unfortunately! I was shaking. I’m happy that I made the last volley and it was really so close. Naomi could be standing here. It’s me, and I’m really grateful for it.”

Fourth seed Mirra Andreeva reached the quarter-finals of the WTA China Open with a straightforward win.

The 19-year-old Russian defeated Ukraine’s Daria Snigur 6-2 6-2 at Beijing’s National Tennis Center.

Next up for Andreeva will be compatriot and 19th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova who is 12 years her senior.
