Aleksander Ceferin to stand for fourth term as Uefa president

Published

on

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin will stand for a fourth term as head of European football’s governing body.

Ceferin informed delegates of his decision at a meeting of all 55 national association chiefs in Berlin.

The move had been widely anticipated and reverses his insistence he would not seek re-election, which the Slovenian initially outlined in February 2024.

At that point Ceferin, who was initially elected in 2016, was embroiled in a row over Uefa changing its statutes to allow him to serve for a fourth term.

However, there had been a growing expectation the 58-year-old would stand.

This has only been made more likely since Uefa launched its efforts to oust Fifa president Gianni Infantino, who scrapped the controversial plan to sell off stakes in the governing body’s competitions to private investors following widespread opposition.

Ceferin has ruled out standing against Infantino himself but is committed to finding a candidate the game can unite around when Fifa holds its presidential election in March.

Celtic Challenge fixtures: Seeding introduced for home advantage in final

Published

on

The final of the 2026-27 Celtic Challenge will be played at the ground of the highest-ranked team rather than a neutral venue.

The cross-border competition, which features two clubs from each of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, gets under way on Saturday, 5 December.

Teams play five home and away fixtures in the regular season and there is an added incentive for placings, with the higher seed of the two semi-final winners hosting the final.

Last season Wolfhounds beat Irish rivals Clovers in a final played at Hive Stadium in Edinburgh.

The champions, who won the title for the third successive season, get the 2026-27 campaign under way at home to Welsh side Brython Thunder in Belfast.

Edinburgh also travel to Ireland to face Clovers while the other Welsh team, Gwalia Lightning, entertain Glasgow.
