‘Baywatch’ Team Talk Shooting In LA & Casting TikTok star Noah Beck
EXCLUSIVE: The rebooted Baywatch will “remind the broader Hollywod community that there are enormous advantages to shooting in Los Angeles,” according to its showrunner.
Matt Nix claimed “we forget at our peril” that the TV and movie biz began in Hollywood, coming as debate continues to rage over the number of shows relocating production, although a new federal tax credit could help things. Baywatch itself secured a $21.1 million (40%) tax credit late last year from the California Film Commission.
Fox and Fremantle‘s Baywatch, arguably one of the most quintessentially L.A. shows of all time, is set to make a splash at MIPCOM Cannes this year and Nix was speaking to Deadline in the days leading up to the market alongside stars Stephen Amell and Noah Beck.
“As much as Miami Vice shaped one generation’s idea of Miami, Baywatch created a vision of Los Angeles and California,” said Nix, who says he boarded the long-gestating project when first responders were spending almost every day visiting his house amid last year’s L.A. wildfires.
Nix said shooting in L.A. was “a major part of what drew me to the project.” “I’ve been very aware of the challenges facing production in Los Angeles, but I’d love to remind the broader Hollywood community that there are also enormous advantages to shooting here,” he added. “People say it’s impossible to shoot in L.A., but it isn’t.”
There remain natural advantages to shooting in Hollywood, Nix added. “Los Angeles is where the actors are. We can bring in great guest performers who might not travel across the country for a single day’s work’,” he added. “The other thing is that the beach is the beach. If you’re shooting a film set in the mountains, you go to the mountains because that’s where they are. Los Angeles has the same kind of essential location value.”
Nix is a native Californian who jumped at the chance to spend some time shooting there. Things were different for Amell, who was born in Canada yet distinctly remembers going to his seventh grade class the day after CJ Parker’s (Pamela Anderson) world-famous running sequence and “everyone was talking about the thing they had seen on television the night before.”
Amell thinks Baywatch’s lasting impact cannot be understated and says it is “one of the main reasons I eventually moved to California after high school.”
“When you watched the show as a kid in Toronto in February, you wondered, ‘Is that a real place? Can you really go there and live?’. It created this aspirational view of California,” added Amell.
He has big shoes to fill. In the rebooted Baywatch, which launches on Fox next year and is being sold by Fremantle at MIPCOM, he plays Hobie Buchannon, son of David Hasselhoff’s iconic Mitch Buchannon. In the reboot, Hobie Buchannon’s daughter returns to his life and wants to follow in her dad’s footsteps and train as a lifeguard in one of the most important beach jobs in the world.
“David Hasselhoff’s performance has endured for a quarter of a century and remains an indelible part of pop culture,” said Amell.
In order to stave off the pressure, Amell said Nix and producer Mike Horowitz “simplified it for me by saying, ‘This is a father-daughter show set against the backdrop of Baywatch‘.”
He approached the role with “three versions” of Hobi in mind, “Captain Hobi,” “off duty Hobi” and “Hobi as a dad,” a “framework that allowed me to focus on the work scene by scene and day by day.”
“When I saw the material we’re debuting at MIPCOM, it was probably the first time I thought, ‘Wow, this is Baywatch‘,” said Amell.
“There’s a massive responsibility when you put on those red shorts”
During the filming process he got to know co-star Beck, whose journey to the series has been an unusual one.
Beck made his way to acting via TikTok, where he broke out in a seriously big way during the pandemic (he is also a former soccer player).
While Beck is too young to remember the original series, he said he “understands the iconography that comes with it.”
“There’s a massive responsibility when you put on those red shorts,” he added. “It almost felt like putting on superhero armor every morning.”
Beck, who also lives in California, loved filming Baywatch and hopes the role can help open the acting floodgates, as he stresses that his background in content creation barely gives him a natural advantage (Nix says he didn’t realize Beck was a TikTok star when he cast him).
“I know that my following can get me into a room, but it won’t keep me there,” added Beck. “I grew up playing sports, and I missed the camaraderie of a team. I found that in acting. It takes a village, and I’ve found it a privilege to be part of such a large production. I’ve accidentally fallen in love with acting, and I hope the work keeps coming.”
Sadly Beck can’t make it to Cannes this year but Nix, Amell, co-star Brooks Nader and executives are out in full force.
Amell is positive about the future of the reboot, saying thoughts have already turned to Season 2. “But you can’t think about the big-picture expectations,” he added. “I’m focusing on the work step by step.”

Doha Film Festival To Showcase 4 Qatari Features In Milestone Moment
Qatar’s Doha Film Festival will premiere four Qatari features and one original series at its upcoming edition in November in a watershed moment for the local film and TV industry.
Feature films Jodari Meno by Jamal Al Khanji, A Very Ordinary Life by Mohamed Deniz, First to Fly by Rodrigo Vazquez Salessi and When the News Breaks You by Hamad Al Hajri will debut as Special Screenings.
The sidebar will also showcase Elzam, which is produced by Jassim Al Romaihi and Ahmed Al Baker as an original series from Katara Studios.
These Qatari productions join 15 previously announced features which will play in the International Competition, with the full festival lineup due to be unveiled in the coming weeks.
It’s the biggest haul of local features to be unveiled in one year since Qatar began its mission to build a film and TV business from scratch with the launch of the Doha Film Institute in 2010.
Jodari Meno follows director Al Khanji’s quest to land a world-record dogtooth tuna. What begins as an extreme pursuit becomes an intimate journey into obsession, mortality and the search for meaning.
It was supported by The Film House Originals, Alkhanji Enterprise, Doha Film Institute, Al Jazeera Documentary and Media City Qatar.
Deniz’s A Very Ordinary Life is a Qatar-Morocco production, produced by Abdulrahim Al-Siddiqi and Bouchra Malek. It follows a retired Qatari pilot and a young Moroccan art teacher who, unknowingly father and daughter, are drawn towards one another through dreams, letters and a buried secret.
First to Fly by Rodrigo Vazquez Salessi follows two young gymnasts who became the first athletes in the history of Qatar and their respective countries to compete at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships.
When the News Breaks You is a production examining the realities faced by journalists working across the Middle East. It explores the challenges confronting journalists reporting from war zones and conflict areas, and the personal cost of bringing stories from the region to audiences around the world.
Elzam is an eight-part documentary series following a group of falconers on hunting expeditions, documenting a tradition that has long been a source of pride in Qatar, the Gulf and the wider Arab world.
Jodari Meno and When the News Breaks You both received funding through the Doha Film Institute’s Grants Programme and participated in mentorship activities at Qumra 2025.
“This is a watershed moment for Qatar’s film and creative industries. To present four feature films and an original series from Qatar at Doha Film Festival is a powerful reflection of how far our creative ecosystem has come. These projects mark Qatar’s increasingly meaningful role in empowering ambitious global stories and supporting the talent behind them,” said Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of Doha Film Institute (DFI) and Director of Doha Film Festival.
Three of the films – Jodari Meno, A Very Ordinary Life and First to Fly – were supported by Media City Qatar, the government-backed media, innovation and technology hub in Doha.
“It’s great to see not one but three films supported by Media City selected to screen in the special screenings program at Doha Film Festival 2026,” said the hub’s CEO Hamad Omar AlMannai.
“What makes this especially exciting is that Doha Film Festival gives filmmakers from Qatar and the wider region a global platform to help their stories reach audiences around the world. This is also a testament to the power of the media ecosystem we are enabling with partners like the Doha Film Institute and the opportunities it creates for media growth in Qatar and the region.”
The Doha Film Festival will take place from November 19-27, with key partners including Katara, Media City Qatar, the Film Committee and Visit Qatar.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK All Stars’ To Keep Production In UK
EXCLUSIVE: The BBC may have pulled the plug on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK but the show must go on and its new home is keeping production local.
Streamer WOW Presents Plus, where the new RuPaul’s Drag Race UK All Stars will launch next fall, will remain in the UK rather than moving to an international production hub, we can reveal.
WOW Presents Plus, which is run by RuPaul’s Drag Race producer World of Wonder, revealed it would be keeping the Drag Race UK flame alive with an All Stars version on the day it emerged the BBC had axed the main series.
Drag Race UK All Stars will feature Queens from the eight previous seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. The final one of those is currently airing. The show has been a big hit for BBC Three and also spawned three seasons of a different spin-off, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. The World, but its cancelation emerged a few weeks back amid big content cuts at the BBC. All seasons of Drag Race UK and UK vs the World will be available on Wow Presents Plus alongside the new All Stars show.
The Drag Race franchise is a global phenomenon with local editions around the world including Canada, México, Belgium, France, Brazil, Australia and the Philippines. Many, although not all, international versions are filmed in a production hub in the Philippines, but World of Wonder has been clear the new UK show will stay in Britain. Host RuPaul Charles has a fondness for the Brits, while lead judge Michelle Visage has a home in the UK.
“Thanks to the extraordinary support from our fans and brand partners, we are thrilled to confirm that RuPaul’s Drag Race UK All Stars will be produced right here in the UK” said World of Wonder co-founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. “We could not be more grateful to our community for making this possible, and we can’t wait to bring this new chapter to WOW Presents Plus members worldwide.”

Vigilante Horror ‘Non-Player Character’ Heads To AFM
EXCLUSIVE: Alliance Media Partners (AMP) has boarded world sales ahead of the American Film Market (AFM) on Non-Player Character, a vigilante horror which has just completed its post-production.
Pic is directed by Nathan Tape, written by Tim Cairo and Nathan Tape, and stars Jared Bankens, Eddie Jemison and Madison Wolfe.
The synopsis read: “Hank Krinkle is a socially isolated content moderator who spends his days policing the most depraved corners of the internet while caring for his abusive, dying father. When Hank’s desperate search for a black-market kidney draws him into an underground world of sex work, conspiracy and algorithmic manipulation, the boundaries between the digital world and reality begin to collapse.
“As Hank becomes increasingly entangled in this hidden network, his grip on the real world starts to unravel. What begins as a desperate attempt to save his father develops into an unhinged journey through exploitation, male ego and the violent underbelly of online culture — forcing Hank to question whether he is still the person controlling his life, or merely another non-player character trapped inside someone else’s game.”
Producer Tim Cairo said: “Non-Player Character expertly blends surrealist horror with the menacing hyper-masculinity of the vigilante thriller, delivering a frightening portrait of our digital existence. It is precisely the kind of boundary-pushing material that AMP specializes in bringing to market. We couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with AMP in introducing the world to Nathan Tape’s audacious new vision. “
Anthony Buckner and Bob Portal negotiated the deal for AMP with Logan Taylor of New Ratio Films and Tim Cairo of Cairo Pictures.
Anthony Buckner, AMP’s Head of Sales and Acquisitions, added: “Non-Player Character is exactly the kind of bold, provocative thriller that cuts through in today’s market. It’s smart, unsettling and taps into our growing dependence on technology while delivering a gripping story with real edge. We’re excited to bring it to buyers worldwide.”
