Liverpool 0-3 Man City: Ryan Gravenberch’s sending off in Premier League defeat criticised by Jamie Carragher | Football News
Ryan Gravenberch’s sending off in Liverpool’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City was a “shocking decision” by referee Chris Kavanagh, according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
Gravenberch, the standout player for an hour, was shown red after receiving a second yellow for a challenge on Jeremy Doku with the game tied at 0-0 in a flashpoint that turned the game, which had been finely poised, in City’s favour.
Erling Haaland’s opener came just two minutes and 37 seconds after Gravenberch was dismissed, and within six minutes Doku had doubled City’s advantage before Rayan Cherki added a third with 12 minutes to play.
Gravenberch had picked up his first caution shortly after the restart for a foul on City midfielder Elliot Anderson, which Sky Sports pundit Carragher described as a “nothing challenge”.
“It’s such a poor decision by the referee,” Carragher said after the game. “The thing that frustrates me is that he wasn’t going to give a yellow card. He only gives it when he thinks Anderson is hurt.
“That has nothing to do with whether a foul should or should not be a yellow card.”
He added: “It’s barely a foul. It’s a shocking decision.”
“It feels really harsh when you think of the two challenges,” Carragher said of Gravenberch’s sending off on co-commentary.
“The first one was not a yellow card. It was so harsh for a nothing challenge on Anderson, and the referee was far too quick to get the yellow card out.”
Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, also on co-commentary, said Gravenberch’s second yellow was “very soft”, before adding: “The only thing I would say is, knowing you’re on a yellow and wrong side of Doku, does he need to make the challenge?
“He’s given the referee a dilemma.”
‘Liverpool looked like they had four sent off’
Manchester City had an xG of 0.16 before Gravenberch’s sending off but dominated once Liverpool were down to 10 men.
Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane felt Gravenberch’s dissmissal turned the match in City’s favour but criticised Liverpool’s response to the red card.
“I don’t see how he can get a yellow card for that,” Keane said of Gravenberch’s first booking. “The whole game then changes.
“Liverpool struggled with the physicality. There were spaces everywhere. Liverpool looked like they had four men sent off. City were controlling it. For the first hour it was a tight game.”
Daniel Sturridge was in full agreement and said the decision to award Gravenberch’s first yellow card was “a joke”.
“The game changed on the red card. We have to be truthful about that,” Sturridge said on Sky Sports. “City delivered after the red card changed the game. Prior to that, it was very even.”
Sky Sports’ Micah Richards was equally puzzled about the first booking the Liverpool midfielder received. “That is soft. How is that a yellow card? I don’t understand,” said Richards.

Kimi Antonelli F1 title permutations: How Mercedes driver could clinch world championship at United States GP | F1 News
Kimi Antonelli could become Formula 1’s youngest world champion as early as the next race – the United States Grand Prix – on October 25.
Mercedes’ Antonelli increased his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship to a season-high 102 points with a third-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix.
George Russell remains second in the standings but a ninth-place finish after engine penalties had left him starting at the back of the grid dropped him beyond a century of points behind his team-mate for the first time, while Lewis Hamilton’s late slide off the podium leaves the Ferrari driver 111 points off the pace in third place.
With such a large lead and with a scheduled six races left in the 2026 season, the world title now looks a formality for the 20-year-old Italian in just his second year of F1 to usurp Sebastian Vettel as the sport’s youngest title winner.
A first chance – albeit an outside one – to clinch the crown will arrive as soon as the next race at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, live on Sky Sports F1…
How Antonelli could win the title at the United States GP
There will be five scheduled races left – Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi – after the United States Grand Prix takes place on Sunday October 25 and a maximum of 125 points left to play for.
To win the title in Austin, Antonelli needs to increase his championship lead by 23 points. For that to happen he must win the grand prix AND then hope both Russell and Hamilton do not score sufficient points to stay within 124 points of him going to Mexico.
The permutations for Antonelli to become champion in Austin are:
- Antonelli wins the race (25 points)
and
- Russell finishes ninth or lower (2 points or less)
and
- Hamilton finishes fifth or lower (10 points or less)
Were Antonelli to win the race and Russell finish ninth, Antonelli would hold a 125-point lead over his team-mate with exactly 125 points left to play for. But that would still be enough for Antonelli to become champion, provided Hamilton was also still outside the top four in the race.
That is because victory in Austin would be the the Italian’s ninth of the year and with Russell on three wins the Briton would only be able to get to a maximum of eight in the five races left. Antonelli would therefore be guaranteed the title on results countback, with race wins the first tiebreaker in event of an end-of-season points tie.
What about the other drivers still in mathematical contention?
Max Verstappen (119 points back), Charles Leclerc (125 points back) and Lando Norris (139 points back) all remain in mathematical title contention too after Singapore but would all be automatically knocked out by an Antonelli win in Austin wherever they finished that race.
‘If I don’t do my job well, then the result won’t come’ – Antonelli vows to stay focused
Antonelli is now within touching distance of an incredible historic achievement but stressed after Singapore that he cannot afford to let that fact distract him from his performance in Austin.
“I know it’s very close, I know it’s there, but I just need to make sure that I keep doing the best I can,” he said.
“You know, the mindset is always the same, to go out there and win and perform the best way I can. I think this weekend [in Singapore] I haven’t particularly driven that well. I felt like I could have done a better job, but I feel confident that, you know, a week to reset and I’m really looking forward to being back in Austin.
“But, at the end of the day, if I don’t do my job well, then the result won’t come. So in order to achieve what I want, I need to perform, as simple as that.”
Formula 1 next heads to The Americas for another triple header with the United States Grand Prix in Austin up first on October 23-25, live on Sky Sports F1. Stream Sky Sports with NOW – no contract, cancel anytime
