‘Crystal Lake’ Pays Tribute To Snake Killed During Filming Of 1980 ‘Friday the 13th’ — Series Premieres Today On Peacock

More than 45 years after the first Friday the 13th slashed its way into horror history, the franchise’s new prequel series is righting a real-life wrong from the original film’s set. Crystal Lake, which premieres today (October 15) on Peacock, pays tribute to a trained snake that was actually killed while filming the 1980 classic.

Series creator Brad Caleb Kane revealed that in the first episode, Pamela Voorhees — played by Linda Cardellini — finds a snake in the camp pantry and sets it free. That quiet moment, Kane said, is “a direct nod” to the serpent that died during production of the original movie.

A Prequel Decades In The Making

Crystal Lake is the first live-action expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise in over 15 years, arriving after years of copyright litigation between director Sean S. Cunningham and writer Victor Miller that blocked new projects for most of the last decade. Produced by A24 and developed by Kane (fresh off showrunning HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry), the eight-episode series — all available today — goes back to when Pamela Voorhees was still a grieving mother, roughly a year after her young son Jason drowned in the lake.

Cardellini plays Pamela as a woman descending into revenge-fueled madness, charting the path toward the camp murders of the original film. Callum Vinson plays young Jason, while original final girl Adrienne King returns as Alice Hardy, the role she played in 1980.

What Fans Are Saying

Early reviews note the series fleshes out Pam and Jason’s backstory while ticking off genre essentials — gory murders, hapless police work, and teen drama. Kane says the fan response has been intense, admitting he found it “hard” ignoring fan theories while the show was in production.

The snake tribute is a small, humane grace note in a franchise built on bloodshed — a reminder that even Camp Crystal Lake has a softer side, at least for animals.
