By Google has unveiled its annual Frightgeist list of the top trending Halloween costumes for 2026, and Minecraft’s Verity has scared its way into the top ten — landing at No. 7 on the national ranking. The list, built from what people are actually searching on Google, crowns a fresh crop of horror-inspired outfits dominating this year’s spooky season.

Who Is Verity?
For the uninitiated, Verity is the star of a horror web series from ThatMob that unfolds entirely inside Minecraft. The character is a simple smiling face that grows steadily more unhinged as the story progresses — a premise that has clearly struck a nerve with horror fans and costume hunters alike. Fans should note this is not the same Verity as the new Anne Hathaway movie of the same name, so no, Anne Hathaway movie merch won’t count.
Interest in the costume is strongest on the West Coast. According to Google, people searched for Verity more than anywhere else in Los Angeles, California, suggesting the blocky horror icon could be all over LA parties and conventions this October.
Buddy the Unicorn Tops the List
Sitting above Verity at the very top of the Frightgeist chart is Buddy the Unicorn, from director Casper Kelly’s horror movie. The list also features Nikki from Curry Barker’s viral horror hit Obsession, rounding out a year where horror — from indie web series to viral films — is clearly driving the costume conversation.
Google’s Frightgeist rankings have become a reliable snapshot of pop culture’s Halloween mood, and 2026’s edition makes one thing clear: the line between gaming, internet horror, and mainstream costume culture has never been blurrier. Alongside the overall list, Google published separate rankings for kids, pets, and duo costumes, giving households plenty of inspiration for coordinated scares.
Minecraft’s Horror Moment
Verity’s spot at No. 7 is a milestone for Minecraft-based horror. The game has hosted countless fan-made horror maps and creepypasta-style projects over the years, but few have broken through to mainstream costume charts. With Halloween still weeks away, expect Verity’s smiling face to become one of the most recognizable — and most unsettling — sights of the season.
