Good news for gamers dreading another decade-long wait: Rockstar Games says you won’t have to wait another eight years after GTA 6 for its next game. The studio spent more than eight years building its next blockbuster, but the tech and team assembled for it should make future releases much faster.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Rockstar’s head of development Phil Hooker explained that the studio expanded massively and rebuilt its technology during GTA 6’s production — and that investment will pay dividends going forward. “The engine, the tools, and the team we’ve built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly,” he said.
Building Sideways, Not Upwards
Hooker stressed that Rockstar wants to expand on what it already created rather than continually rebuilding its technology from scratch. “I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content,” he explained.
That approach should help the studio avoid another extended drought between major releases. For context: GTA 5 launched in 2013, followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 after a series of delays — meaning roughly eight years between the studio’s last two flagship launches. During that time, Rockstar grew from 2,441 employees around RDR2’s release to 4,711 staff across 12 offices.
There’s Precedent for a Fast Follow-Up
Rockstar has done the quick-turnaround trick before: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City followed GTA 3 in less than a year, reusing the same technology base. Leadership hopes the studio can take a similar approach now that so much of the GTA 6 groundwork is complete.
Of course, Rockstar hasn’t announced its next major game yet, and the comments don’t confirm the next Grand Theft Auto title will arrive quickly — especially given the scale of the studio’s ambitions. But for fans who’ve waited the better part of a decade between releases, the message is clear: the days of eight-year gaps are, hopefully, over.
