The upcoming fantasy romance anime The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom is adding some star power to its knightly roster. The anime’s official website announced on Thursday that Shōya Ishige has been cast as Johann, a son of a noble house in Marronnier’s western territory who serves as vice captain of the Marronnier knights.

Johann is heading to the Country of Long Nights alongside Insomniac on a diplomatic mission, and viewers won’t have to wait long to meet him — the character debuts in the anime’s third episode, airing Saturday.

A Kingdom of Seven Brothers

Based on Nao Iwamoto’s manga Marronnier Ōkoku no Shichinin no Kishi, the fantasy romance centers on seven brothers who serve as knights of the Marronnier Kingdom. The kingdom sits at the center of a group of eight kingdoms, and each brother is dispatched to a different kingdom as an ambassador, setting out on adventures to find their fated partner.

The manga has been running in Shogakukan’s Flowers magazine since 2016, with the 11th volume shipped on June 10. It’s a critically beloved series too — it topped the list of manga for female readers in the 2018 edition of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!) guidebook.

A Heavyweight Staff Lineup

The anime boasts an impressive creative team. Kiyoko Sayama (Skip Beat!, Vampire Knight, To Your Eternity seasons 2-3) is directing at J.C. Staff, while Shinzō Fujita (To Your Eternity seasons 1-3, The World Is Still Beautiful) is both writing and overseeing the series scripts. Yuriko Maeda (chief animation director for Requiem of the Rose King and One Punch Man TV 2) is designing the characters, Yoshiaki Fujisawa (Apocalypse Hotel, Land of the Lustrous) is composing the music, and Jin Aketagawa (Dr. Stone, Fire Force) serves as sound director.

The anime premiered on the NHK Educational channel on October 3 at 6:25 p.m. JST. International viewers can catch it on Amazon Prime Video, which is streaming the series along with an English dub. Meanwhile, Viz Media licensed the manga on October 1 and released the first two chapters digitally the same day — so fans can dive into the source material alongside the anime’s run.
